Afternoon all,

Apologies if this covers territory that's already been covered.

My grandpa died 10 years ago, and my parents have revealed that he kept quite the collection of coins, one item of which appears to be a 99% complete collection of FAO Albums.

They're all meticulously documented by himself, and it appears to contain all 15 albums, with all the relevant coins and panels. Each album is separately documented with the pages, coins, countries of origin, and they're all in their original packaging, with tissue paper between the pages and suchlike. There's 26 pages of lovely hand written notes that I'm in the process of scanning at the moment.

Whilst going through them just now, I note that it doesn't have Page 7
of Album 1 that is mentioned in the article at http://www.numismatics-community.co...icleId=27428 so it's not "complete" in that sense. Also, having counted all 78 pages, there's 490 coins, but no gaps in any of the panels. There's also all the letters and telex notes that came from the FAO, and a loose San Marino coin that was delayed in issuing, but later used to swap for an Ethiopian coin in a different panel

Is there anything I should be looking out for, like any rarities, things that are of particular interest, and so on? Is it worth trying to bring the albums up to the 504 coins mentioned in that article (where to start?!), or break up the collections and sell albums individually? I appreciate it's not one of the "1,379 complete collections", but I feel that it's really pretty close to it.

I'm based in Scotland, and there's not many coin shops around that I know of! We'd also be interested in selling them, if anyone knows of any interested parties.

Many thanks!

Maybe it is a good idea to have a look at this webpage: http://fao-coins.info/

As you can see on the page, there are forgeries of books as well as of the coins on the market. However, these forgeries are quite recent , so I doubt that your grandfather has encountered them. But it is always better to be safe than to be sorry and to check them or let them check by a professional.

Many thanks for the reply.

I spent a good few hours today going through fao-coins.info, and indeed there's a tonne of information. A lot of it is indecipherable to an outsider such as myself though. However, once thing I couldn't find on the site was anything to do with albums 8 through to 15. I also emailed fao-coins.info, but the email address bounced.

The original receipts are floating around in the boxes too, along with the original packaging bearing the Rome postmarks. You're right, though, in suggesting that I get an expert to have a look at it. However, locating one in Scotland or even the UK is not my strong point at the moment!

I think I'll document each coin and each page I have, and then take it from there. As much as they're part of my family history, it's time to move them on to folks that understand and appreciate them more than myself.

Hi Kyle,

Have a look at http://www.numis.co.uk
There you can find a listing of respected coin dealers in the UK.

I have holidays in the second half of August. Since Scotland is always a nice place te go, maybe I should come over and see if we can arrange a deal on your coins.
