I recently found out my Mom keeps coffee cans of change in her closet and has been throwing loose change in them for about 15 years. She knows enough to pull silver so quarters and dimes are probably a waste of time. I went through all the nickles and found nothing noteworthy. Up next the pennies!

I'm probably the most excited for these. I'm not sure how many are here, it's one of the big coffee cans and it's half full so there's quite a bit. They've been collecting for a while so I'm expecting a lot of BU 90's and older. I grabbed a few handfuls last night and pulled a '42 Canadian cent right off the rip, so that's a good sign. I'm hoping for one decent find other than the usual wheats (maybe a WAM?). Will report back....

Pennies-That-Have-Been-Collecting-For-15-Years?-Sure

I don't have the patience to look for all the double dies and etc., so I'm just looking for:

wheats
anything 1989 or older in BU
WAMs
CAMs
60 small date
70s small date
and of course anything obvious like IHC, blank planchet,s or proofs

Take your time to look for all the other good stuff. Why not? Isn't that what a hobby should be? A consumer of time?

I looked through a couple of boxes of coins, in part, during a couple of World Cup soccer games. First time in my life, after maybe ten tries, that I've actually managed to stay awake during the entire time a soccer game was on TV.

The funny thing is that the top layer is all the newer stuff that was thrown in, and it'll get older and older the deeper I get, so theoretically better and better.

If you are excited, go through and look for the specific coins you listed. On a rainy day (or long soccer match), look for the varieties. It's not a race unless you make it one - enjoy the hobby. I had a mini-keg that I was tossing my LMCs into for years - went through that earlier this year and found several BU coins and a few nice varieties!

Did you know that the 90s has several valuable varieties and those in AU and better can fetch decent money $35 - few hundred+)? That might slow me down...and indeed it did!

Good luck on the hunt and report back with pictures!

Yeah, perhaps I should look for all the errors and what not. Does anyone know of a good checklist? Everything on Lincoln Cent resource seems too exhaustive for me.

Here is what you might do -

- Visit Coppercoins.com and check out the die variety search tool ( http://www.coppercoins.com/advsearch.php )
- Type in the year you want to look up, the mint, the variety type, and class and rating if you are so inclined.
- Review the top level varieties list; you'll see many are minor-minor varieties and there are larger ones - pick the ones you want to look for
- Write down on a pad by year the date and variety you are searching for and keep it with you when you are doing your search.

It'll go slowly at first and you'll get speed once you get a feel for the year and variety that you are hunting. Set the coins aside for the deeper dive to confirm your specimen. You'll note on the top level variety list that they will have EDS, MDS, LDS or combinations of them for you to click on to find out the markers and finer details.

I've had decent success with the 80s ad 90s varieties which is to say I have found a few of the thousands listed (a very small dent). If you get stuck and aren't sure what you have, post pictures of the coin in the Modern Errors/Variety forum here and the experts will help you out.

Good luck on the hunt!

Good luck with that! Are you going to roll the unwanted ones up to take to the bank?

It's technically my Mom's money so if she wants me to leave them in the coffee can I will, or I can dump them at my credit union for 4%, her choice.

Gone through probably 15% or so? Pulled a few wheats including a 1914! Not a D though. Tons and tons of 98-00 to look for WAMS, and a few other years that I pulled for errors that I'll check out afterwards... very intrigued by the bottom layer.

Nice - 1914! It's not often you find a teen in circulation these days. Good luck on the WAM. I found a 2000 WAM in that mini keg barrel when I went through it. I had around 400 or so 98-00 LMCs to check - found the one. Hopefully you get yours in this can of coins!!

I'm probably 60% through and have found a '42 and '50 canadian as well as 5 wheats including the 1914 and a whole bunch of randoms set aside for error checking. Will report back at the end.

A whole bunch of them are stuck together and I couldn't figure out how for a while - then I realized... melted rubber band pieces. Very strange...

Just finished going through all these...

No proofs, no IHCs, no WAMs, no errors to speak of (I didn't carefully examine every penny, just pulled the big error years and checked after the fact)...

BUT

11 wheats:

1914
1945x2
1949
1952
1953
1955 BU - see post: https://goccf.com/t/182404
1956D
1958x2

1942 Canadian
1950 Canadian

All in all, the 1914 and the BU 1955 make it a pretty good haul... I was really hoping for an Indian or a WAM though.
