Do any of you guys get to detect on what I'd consider 'old' sites? I understand you guys in the US don't have Roman/medieval sites to go hunting for but what about places where the first European settlers lived, or wagon trails or Civil War battle sites etc etc?
I look with interest at the finds that are displayed here, read what is written...& a lot of the stuff is what I'd class as Modern ( 1900 onwards ). I obviously come across such finds here in the UK also but I 'aim' for the much older finds if possible.
OK I'm no more allowed to detect on 'known' battlefields or historical sites of interest any more than you guys in the US are but with a bit of research, luck & determination there's plenty out there for me to find that isn't known about. Is this the sort of stuff any of you go hunting for ( old stuff ) or are you just happy to find the modern items? Are there any Indiana Jone's out there?

Check out some of the finds/pictures through that link! I thought finding Roman stuff was interesting but that civil war stuff looks the business to me! I'd love to detect some of those places.

When I was a kid, I remember that my grandfather had a handful of bullets he got from Gettysburg when he was young. He said that found them without a metal detector, he just needed to look around on the ground. Now Gettysburg and many other Civil War battlegrounds are national parks. It's illegal to remove so much as a squirrel poop without being on the wrong side of the law.

Yea...I can understand that I guess. Much the same here in the UK as well. Mind you, battles were fought in many places other than the 'known' battle grounds.
I've been to Germany quite a few times, down to Nuremberg & I've detected the old defensive sites from WW11 & found some quite interesting stuff...plus a bit of dangerous stuff! My mates & I used to get into some of the underground bunker systems on the Obersalzburg in Berchtesgaden as well to take a look around but most of that has been sealed up in the past few years by the Bavarian government.
Another thing I tend to do is look out for rabbit holes &mole hills on historical sites such as the Roman amphitheatre in St Albans or the various locations along Hadrian's wall as I've found a fair few pieces of Roman pottery/glass & bone tools doing that.
Always got my eyes to the floor...hence I walk into things a lot!
