All of the best fakes are made from nearly pure gold. Modern 22 ct gold is commonly for this purpose.
The best way to detect a fake under these circumstances is to look for trace elements in the alloy, using X Ray Florescence analysis (XRF), and comparing the alloy mix against a known genuine coin of the same era and mint.

XRF is non destructive, and relavitely cheap to perform.

I would recommend having David Sear certify the coin as real. In the case of this coin considering at this point that it is real I would give it a grade of aVF.
