My estimate is VF35 as well, even if it compares favorably with examples graded EF40. I remember reading somewhere the 1885 S dime is actually one of those slightly over-rated coins. Someone just posted an 1868 LSD that is a VF35 and you can see this 1885-S has less wear on the higher points of the obverse relief as well as the reverse. Nice dime Germanics.
