8 Reales Cob: Not As Easy As I Thought!

diatonix Valued Member Norway 89 Posts	Posted 08/03/2014 05:20 am Despite checking all sources known to me I still haven't been able to find out more about this 8 reales cob from my collection. Primarily I'd like to know its mint. At first I presumed it to be from Potosi, but it seems that even on Spanish (motherland) cobs the second small shield (Portugal) is not always there. The crown seems to be a bit unusual inasmuch as its base is straight, with a peculiar pattern (0 III 0 III 0 III O). To the right of the shield the last 2 "I"s of VIII can be seen. There could be a partial date on the cross side: 16** (lower part of "6" only). Comments and thoughts are very much appreciated! Edited by diatonix 08/03/2014 08:07 am Report this Post to the Staff

diatonix Valued Member Norway 89 Posts	Posted 08/11/2014 09:03 am Apart from MathieuMa, another expert (from Spain) corroborates that it can only be a Cartagena 8 reales cob. The give-away is the missing pomegranate. Colombian silver cobs are said to be extremely rare. Report this Post to the Staff
