Hello from Bolivia, NC

I'm not a collector, but I did a google search and came across this forum. I found what I believe to be an 1715 plate fleet 8 escudos gold coin in the Bahamas two weeks ago. I have taken it to a jeweler for some of the deposits to be cleaned from it, and still it is in rough condition. I've joined this site to try and find some assistance on where to take this find/coin to have it looked over, and identified. I live in South Eastern NC. any suggestions?

How did the jeweler clean it?

First question : can you please post pictures ?
I hope the jeweler didn't cleaned it a harsh way. I suppose the easiest is in an ultrasonic bath if it has marine concretions. But then, maybe it was sand washed :)
Sooo ... could you please post a picture ? :D

The jeweler put it in the ultrasound device and let it sit for a half an hour or so. It came somewhat cleaner. Some of the letters can be read on the surface of the coin, and it matches some of the escudos I've seen on Google. Pics from my phone are to large to be downloaded, I get an error. I'll continue to try.

It definitely has the 8 escudos size / design.
The cross looks like the one from Mexico.

What worries me is that it looks corroded, gold don't get corroded.
That's pretty visible on the second picture where the coin looks razor thin near the edge (like corroded silver)
Are you sure it's not a base metal core, with a gold layer ?

It may very well be a gold plated layer. The jeweler picked up a precious metal on his meter, but the condition is not good so it will need more cleaning. Surely it's not pure gold, because of the corrosion. silver cob is my guess. To whom should I take it to have it cleaned? A coin collector, or my jeweler? Hate to mess with it too much because it may become brittle.

OK, if it's not pure gold, forget the 8 escudos.
It's still strange to find a plated coin like that, it could be a jewelry reproduction maybe ... or some old coin stuffed in the sand to make fun of detectorists, but that one looks particularly corroded.

In a such condition, the best solution I see is electrolysis, but you could also damage the coin. It's cool like that IMHO :)
What do others here think about it ?

It could be a replica, buried for detectorists to find and never found. Here's another thread where someone else "found a coin in the Bahamas", which turned out to be a base-metal replica.

Now, your coin does not seem to be exactly the same type of replica as the one posted there, but I am still worried; what little can be seen of the original coin design does not look quite right, when compared to genuine coins. Here's someone selling replica pirate pieces-of-eight with this design, in bulk, for less than 1 British pound each. Those replicas are made of tin.

Once most of the accretions are removed, ask the jeweller to do a specific gravity test; a tin or pewter replica would be much less dense than a solid silver coin.

I found the same link, Sap, but you beat me to it. What is it they say about great minds?
I do think the tressure of eight arches looks more like the silver coins of Philip III-V, but the appearance of this coin is of a plated replica.
