Quote: Frankly, I'm surprised that a moderator here would make a statement that in essence could be characterized as bashing the most successful grading service ever. I know of no one more thorough in their job of verifying
Morgan dollar variety attributions than PCGS' Mike Faraone. What Mike does not know well, he is free to admit, but he does know how to consult with long time recognized experts in VAMs, people such as Leroy VanAllen, Jeff Oxman and Logan McKechnie, among others.
I have seen many errors by all grading services, and with attributions as well. On this coin it looks like they got it right. I have an 1876 Baslow re-stike that PCGS graded and attributed as an 1876 re-strike that is in effect a 1960's era re-re-strike.This coin is graded MS-65. The guy that owns it bought it as an 1876 re-strike for 2900.00, just a little bit under sheet. The 1960's re-strike is worth about 100.00. PCGS views there mistake as a "Mechanical Error" and will not make the buyer whole for what he paid for this coin. He based his purchase on the "Slab" and what PCGS put on the holder.
