I was reading a topic by harveypb a few days ago on his "bogus" 1833 bust half dollar. It rang a bell as I have had one for ages.

I am curious,I don't know much about them. can the experts educate me on mine? Is it a cast copy? Die struck? contemporary counterfeit? It even has the edge lettering and a lame attempt at reeding between the letters.

weight is 11.9 Grams."edit" it rings like silver and is non magnetic.

thanks for any educational info!

I think it is a cast copy. If you look at the coin with a good magnifying glass you will see the surface is a little porous. At least looking the pictures there are some areas that seem to have porosity. Also the weight should be 13.48g.

It doesn't seem to match up precisely with any of Riddell's catalogued specimens, but it certainly has the look of a contemporary counterfeit. The distinctive diagnostic I spot is the oversized, misshapen "C."

Appears to be 1833, Obv 6, Rev F in Davignon's "Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust half dollars"

page #119, listed as common.

Still nice.
