This bronze medal commemorates the "original" discovery of Neanderthal skeletal remains in a limestone quarry of the Neander Valley (near Düsseldorf) in August, 1856.

I could not pass it up! The medal has not arrived yet. It is listed to be 60 x 65 mm!

From the link I posted (below the picture), it looks like only 10 impressions were made but maybe you can still buy it direct from Paul Huybrechts (75 euros + 10 euros postage). His email is listed here http://www.medailles-paulhuybrechts.be/collega.htm

I bought this one for 80 euros from Heidrun Höhn in Leipzig, Germany, mainly because she takes paypal. It was listed on ma-shops.com. She might still have some others. Heidrun Höhn's contact info is here:

I thought this might be the case, but I wasn't sure. I changed the post above. Thank you for this information. Technically the original post was still correct, since "he" is the traditional gender-neutral pronoun in English.
