I don't know whether or not it's genuine, but it is of the type of a French Military medal that was awarded to both French and non-French soldiers at various times, and served also as analogous to our "purple heart."

This is the Medaille Militaire, issued to Generals and Admirals in charge of frmies and fleets and to non commisioned officers that have distinguished themselves in war. Issued between 1870-1940.
