I recently found a token in the hills of sleepy hollow in coxsackie/athens N.Y. My buddy seems to think it could be a civil war token. There is no date, and I have no idea where to look for details for something like this. If anyone has any idea, please clue in a newbie.

Welcome to the forum! Civil War tokens will always have some sort of patriotic theme like "THE FEDERAL UNION- IT MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED" or references to the military. It sounds like you have maverick token. Normal trade tokens are usually marked with a business name, location, and good for X cents in trade or merchandise. Mavericks are a bit trickier in the fact that they have no indication as to a place of origin. These tokens can sometimes take a bit of research to figure out and I do not have any reference books for them. Here is a link for some more info about mavericks.
