After switching to steel-plated coins in 2000 why did the RCM make both plated-steel and copper-nickel 5 cent coins in 2005 (Beaver plated-steel, V commemorative copper-nickel) and in 2006 (Beaver in both metal compositions)? What was the purpose of going 'back' to the old composition after several years of plated-steel coins? And why the 1 cent magnetic/non-magnetic compositions? Very confusing!

This is a good question. I suspect the answer is simply a matter of planchet supply and cost, but I would love to know if there was a different reason.

I have heard that the cpz cent planchets were from the same supplier as the US cents. Maybe the RCM got an order of cupro-nickel from that supplier too.

I agree.Likely a matter of cost and/or supply contracts. All 5 cent coins for 2005 were plated steel, both the beaver and the Victory.

That's what I thought, too. The 2006 cupro-nickel 5 cents is interesting, though. I can't explain it. To speculate, perhaps a basic alloy recovery program was attempted or a batch of old planchets were found.

Thanks bibd and DBM for your feedback. Regarding the 2005 V 5 cents coins, I purchased a roll of them from the RCM when they were offered in 2005. Checking them again, they certainly look and feel like they are a plated-steel product. Where the confusion comes from for me is the May, 2011 issue of COIN PRICES magazine which contains a section of Canadian coin values. It lists 89,664,000 Beaver coins having been made in nickel-plated steel composition. It ALSO lists 59,269,192 1945-2005 V coins having been made in solid nickel. Perhaps the magazine is incorrect but I am left wondering.

The numbers are correct, but the Vs were all steel. Even the 1945 originals were steel.

Thank you lyradnoj. Hey, even top-notch magazines make errors now and then!

I see a lot of errors in coin books, and that's not even to mention the out-of-whack prices!
