hey all,
i offer cheap/free shipping on most of my auctions because who wants to pay $12 shipping for a $3 coin? but sometimes when the totals are much higher due to high bidding or multiple items won by a single buyer I will send it with tracking and signature required (out of my own pocket) just to be safe,
well this auction in question went for $195 so as usual I sent it with tracking and signature,
a couple weeks had gone bye and I was checking the status of my package and noticed it was checked in at the post office but no other info yet, waited another week and still nothing,
i decided to inquire at canada post.ca and file a non delivered item just in case the buyer stared a case. I had already started the ball rolling,
here is the 1st email from canada post

now I dont know if I should keep pursuing this as its been so long that I'm sure the buyer would have contacted me by now (he didnt answer my email to him)
but what gets me is canada post asking if I purchased insurance in case of loss!!
i though the tracking and signature would be my insurance ?
if not then what am I paying for?
whats the purpose of a tracking # and/or signature if canada post looses your item your screwed anyway!!
lets hear your thoughts

It's their normal bafflegab to discourage you from pursuing it. You will need to wait for the buyer to open an item not received case and provide them proof that you reimbursed the buyer before you can make a claim. The whole process can take a couple of months or longer from the point where you pay out the reimbursement but stick with and you will eventually get paid. Can't say we've ever had a tracked item go missing within Canada (although I know of cases where it's happened to other sellers) but it's an infrequent yet regular occurrence with international shipments unfortunately. They always seem to make it to the destination country's customs and never come out again.... And I'm talking countries like the US, Germany and France; not third world countries where you would kind of expect it. ALWAYS make sure you get that initial scan when you drop it off at the post office (as you did) otherwise you're dead in the water.

I think you are in the clear since the buyer has not contacted you for a late/missing parcel yet.

It has happened to me a few times that the tracking does not show delivery. But the buyer still got it.

Maybe the postman at the other end forgot to scan the parcel or his scanner was not working.

I also found that if you cover the scan code with tape the scanner does not read the code. So I now leave that area uncovered.

I believe you automatically get $100 insurance with tracked packages. What their question may be referring to is did you purchase the additional insurance up to the total value of the items. If you didn't and they end up paying out a claim you will only be covered for $100.

1. This is not a "scam", as you put it.
2. Why the concern since the buyer has not complained?

What the OP is referring to is the fact that he sent the package with a tracking number and with a necessary signature. This give him a POD (Proof of Delivery) and covers his butt if there are any issues with eBay/paypal.

CP did not take a signature when the item was picked up/dropped off etc.

The OP PAID extra $$ for the tracking and signature, and basically got nothing for the extra money.

You can compare it to someone on ebay charging $15 for shipping, and the actual postage is like $8 or less, he feels ripped off, and has a legitimate beef with Canada post.

I don't think he has much recourse, other than not to use Canada post.

You are paying extra money for a tracking service. If Canada post does not scan codes or track the package, then in my opinion they have not provided the service you paid for.

SCAM: a confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit; swindle.

I don't think CPC is running a fraudulent scheme. And they haven't declared a profit in some time now.

What happened here sounds like an exception and not an every day occurrence where CPC is trying to scam us.

no apparently you no longer covered for the minimum $100 , you get nothing if item is lost, I ask again what am I paying this extra money for? I had no proof of delivery (which I paid for)

Many times you contact a buyer after the sale and there's no response. Pretty normal, they got what they bought and they're happy. I hope this is the case with you.

It is funny that the buyer has not contacted you.
Yes Canada Post is scamming us.
Our $100 signed post when lost, the sender has to wait a month to fill a claim.
The claims department ended up sending me my $46 in settlement.(so much for the $100 insurance).
Never again for me.
Courier service all the way.
Good luck.
