I vote the Morgan dollar. I consider the silver dollar to be the holy grail of American coinage, and none of the various dollar designs are more synonymous with he silver dollar than the Morgan.

"Greatest" is a bit open to interpretation. However, I initially thought of the Lincoln Cent. According to one source, there have been 478,022,310,918 Lincoln cents minted, including all varieties. That's only half a trillion or so....

1933 $20 Reason for being the "greatest" American coin: government forces still track that inanimate object down to this day, much like a terrorist.

I'll also vote for the Fugio. When I bought my first one, broke it out of the holder, and held it, I immediately thought about Benjamin Franklin and his enormous contributions to the new nation.

ASE's I know, I know, it's bullion. However they are BIG, BEAUTIFUL, and most of all...PURE(to the tenth of a degree)! I love holding them in my hands. No matter how many I have, I always want more! If I were sitting on 10 monster boxes, I would probably still be scouring ebay at night looking for a snipe under spot.

My favorite coin would be any early 1793-1794 large cents, coins that American's actually used, yes there were silver dollars, but the value was so great that most people didn't have them in their pockets, it was the cent that fueled our economy in the beginning. The Fugio cent is up there too! Now the greatest coin of all IMO was the pattern $20 Indian gold - not really a coin since it wasn't a circulating issue, but beautiful never less.

Quote:The greatest U.S. coin for me would be the Walking Liberty half dollars... I love them.. Can't imagine why so few mentioned this one and yet one of the biggest sellers at coin shows I go to. Morgans too are a big seller lately but I suspect only a temporary fad. Walking Liberty halves have always been popular. My second choice would be the Mercury dime. Also, oddly enough not mentioned here.

Oooo! Second place for me goes to the Morgan dollar because it propelled the commerce of the day, plus it's iconic in Hollywood. And they're still popular today as collectibles, and at a good entry-level for collectors, won't break the bank. Apparently to fix a wagon it was $1 to the blacksmith according to a western, I forget which one.
