Help With Purchasing Old Roman Coins

My feeling is that $20 might be a little on the expensive side. Not sure of the Canadian exchange rate. See what the others have to say. I would say that you should buy the best that you can afford. Look for lots of detail and if possible good legends.

I agree with the others. You could buy these and be happy ...... for awhile at least ! But you would almost certainly grow weary of them eventually as they all appear to have some 'issues'. Some very nice coins (condition wise) can still be found for $20-25. Beginners are often attracted to silver denarii. The emperor Antoninus Pius is usually reasonably priced and common types can often be found for around 25 dollars in near VF condition. Larger 'brass' Sestertii of AP can even be found for around $30 although usually in a more worn condition. Septimius Severus is another emperor who tends to be easy to find in nice condition. Many late Romans (LRB's) also have a good affordability index. You might find a common type Constantine or Licinius in VF for under $20 on ebay.
Shop around and try to be patient !
Personally as far as the later Roman coins go I feel the 'follis' coins of the tetrarchy period (Diocletian Maximianus Galerius and Constantius) offer the best 'bang for the buck'. I have low balled many an ebay auction and wound up with VF/EF coins for under $20 ! They are stylistically unusual and do not appeal to all tastes. The 'clipped' coin upper right of the picture shows a reverse of one.
