They aren't bad at grading but don't hold them to the super high end grades. They are the best service when dealing with the older collector type coins and classics especially varieties. The graders tend to be specialists in the classics.

I would definitely not call them "garbage basement slabbers". Those that do are usually confusing SEGS with SGS. That happens a lot

SEGS' slabs are sonically sealed, SGS has the little foil labels. For fun with SGS, take out the coin and put another in, then sell it on ebay as a 'rare label error', you know like a Wheat cent slab with a shield cent in it.

I really like SEGS slab holders, they are INMO the best in the business in design, though I'd like to see them with the edge-view inserts. Love the label on top. Larry Briggs is a stand up guy, he started SEGS. Their grading may not always be up to PCGS/NGC consistency. But they are pretty good. Just learn to grade yourself and buy the coin not the holder, you'll do fine.

ALWAYS one of my favorite tables to visit at the major shows! His knowledge and personality make for good interactions. Which is not typical of many dealers....imo.

I have a very nice CT commem in an old SEGS MS66 holder that I think will easily cross at PCGS or NGC at the same grade. I could even see it going 66+. I plan on submitting it next month for crossover. At that time I will try to remember to post the results here.

I beg to differ. SEGS has many of the top Variety Specialist doing the variety coins, Jeff Oxman on VAM silver dollars, J.T. Stanton on Cherrypicker coins, their guarantee is the same as PCGS, NGC or ANACS.

Now as to grading? Maybe they don't hold the same candle as PCGS or NGC in the number of coins graded. And I will agree over all their grading can be iffy in more instances than I find with PCGS, NGC or ANACS< but overall the coins I do have in SEGS holders are all fairly graded IMO.

Always buy the coin not the holder, all TPGs can make mistakes and do!

I just went to their website it now looks like they have the Certification check up and running, (I don't have any of my SEGS at home to verify) Larry was pushing them to get this done so they could be an ebay grading company authorized for sellers. This was the reason holding them back - along with ANACS, however ANACS fixed their certification verification before the original deadline ebay had put out late last year.

There are some nice coins in SEGS holders, but consistency is a problem for them. You have to know how to grade coins if you are going to play with them.
