I didn't become a collector until after stumbling onto this forum (via a google on "junk silver" to add to my stack). I spent way too much on getting my coin education the hard way... being ripped off. I'm thinking there should be a forum category for Newbies like myself to share lessons learned from the problems and pitfalls we've encountered as we seriously got started (obsessed?) collecting.
