I have seen some nasty looking portraits of Nero before but this one is my best yet !

Nero-After-The-Big-

Often he has a grungy uncouth look about him but a full beard is a nice find indeed !

Nero. 54-68 AD. Æ As 27-8mm 8.82 grams
Laureate head right IMP NERO CAESAR AVG GERM
Victory flying left, holding shield inscribed S P Q R. RIC I 351.
Nero-After-The-Big-

Nero-After-The-Big-

I notice that Sear mentions that legends beginning with IMP are post AD65.

Never expected to win this one ......
Rather glad I did

I would add that the weight seems a bit light (so was Nero).
But the coin seems quite genuine.

To 'preempt' the inevitable comments ......

Yes I know Nero predates the Colosseum by a decade
He also predates the Lolapalooza by two millenium !

Great portrait, and your Colosseum joke is temporally appropriate. Nero's grandiose selfie statue, the Colossus, was moved to the Flavian Amphitheater area by Hadrian.

Amphitheatrum Flavium eventually became known as the Colosseum because of the proximity of the structure to the Colossus. "Meet me by the Colossus"

More about the statue as it relates to the Colosseum here. Check out the collector's Colosseum sestertius while you're there.

Thank you for the comments

Per 'Dutch's' comment this is the sellers photo

I didn't even think it was the same coin at first glance !

Nero-After-The-Big-

I really liked the green mottled patina and I am in no way dissatisfied ......
But I am quite mystified where all the green went !

I have a relative who is the spitting image. Perhaps I should nickname him Nero?

Well the Colosseum is located on part of the site for Nero's Domos Aurea so he probably was significantly intoxicated at the site.

Judging from the seller's pictures I am betting you basically stole the coin.

Ah RVFVS, I didnt want to be the one to do it:

Nero-After-The-Big-
Nero-After-The-Big-

This fake surfaced in Germany not too long ago, which I spotted when two sellers (the same guy it seems) had two listed t end about a minute apart. Here's that post. A deceptive fake - I hope you can retrieve your money.

I remember when these two fakes surfaced. Two sellers living in the same town in Germany. Up until then, I had not seen Nero with a beard.

Ach du Lieber !

This is very troubling ! Fortunately I am not out a great deal of money on this !

I need to drink a cup of coffee to think this through.

My first impression was a doubtful one but as I looked it over it seemed to have too many positives.
Never too old to learn !
