Thanks MG....but there has to be a lot of nice pieces out there.. ..it's just that they don't come out to play too often... Every now and again we do get to see a special one..(like when Zonad or Roger throws a good one out at us.. ) You just have to look at the registry sets and guess about some of the special ones that are in there.. ..Or even Rob's vicky cents..How cool are those.. As long as we keep getting to see them ..and therefore have something to shoot for..if only to view them here from time to time..

MG..Your date does look repunched .. ..and mine..has "at least" an 8 over 8..but different from the Charlton examples from the back of the 2010 book. ..8/8 and 'maybe a touch' of 9/9 when viewing the bottom right of the 9.. . . .

Here is the update on the high grade 1875 SD 5 cent which was for auction last night. I did bid the original starting price of 2000, but the opening ( either online or mail bids) caused an opening start of $ 2400. and without seeing the coin in hand it would be a considerable risk.
the coin sold for (converted into $) 3500 plus 20% auction fees +$25 shipping = $ 4225 if Canada customs wants their share of 5+7% (5% GST +7% BCST) it comes to a cost of $4775.-
Do you guys think it is, was worth that kind of money?

Unless it was a certified high grade (MS62+) by ICCS or NGC, I'd say no.

If I was going for it,..I would want to see it in hand,..and barring that,..I would expect to see a variety of perfectly focused pics.
If it wasn't graded by a well established and knowledgeable Canadian rare coin grader (ex. ICCS or PCGS), then I would suspect that something was amiss.
Why put a rare coin like that out there if you're not willing to pay ~$20 to $40 to get it certified...?
..but someone was willing to go deep on it,..so maybe they had a close view of it.

Devlec,
I did post the (not so bad) auction pictures earlier. There is no doubt about the auctioneer and their reputation. It is a well known large place in Europe. their description said it was a extreme high grade coin of exceptional appeal and detail. Good thing about it is that they do protect their reputation by offering a return policy if the item is not as described. They will even pay for the return shipping. You probably are all aware of the grading differences between North America and Europe. The European description of grades can sometimes work in our favor. Most serious European collectors do actually prefer coins that are NOT slabbed. I have that funny feeling that we will see this coin at some time in the Futere offered in either a PCGS or ICCS slab. I believe it was purchased by a North American dealer. Just a hunch. There is a 1880 10 cent in a similar grade up tonight at the same auctioneer. this one comes out of a high end Queen Victoria Collection.

47P7..Thanks for the added info on that 75. I've been out of this for a couple of decades now and was not aware of how the European coin community works. All of my 5 cent collection came from actually viewing and live bidding and wonderful mentors helped a lot. The internet was not around when I was putting this together.. and I'm missing a few.. Yes the 75 pics were OK but I'm a skeptic from viewing too many doctored or angled pics from the web these days. Explaining how that auction house stands behind their offerings surely was an eye opener for me and certainly very encouraging. It still went for a great sum,..and like you would love to see where it ends up..if over here.. Thanks for today's offerings from tfred and MG.. Always great to see their coins.. My 1894..No dated varieties with the 94's..as explained in the Charlton.. I do like this 94 a lot,. and it has a highly polished or somewhat reflective reverse center on my offering. The obverse has a stronger strike and some greater detail at the highest points in and around the ear. There is a rim nick above the T in Gratia and with a 7x loop 'and my eyes',..I can't see a mark anywhere on this coin.. Question: What kind of grade would "you" put on this 94 with "today's grading standards" being used..? ..and of course these pics are not perfect for any true expert grading..and also because of this super blow-up and shooting through 2 sheets of plastic..It's a PITA to try and get right.. . .
