I took a gamble and bought the above item the other day and would like to know if any Belgian/pattern collectors out there would know the weight for this pattern? It is listed in Krause as Pn53.

I have seen an example of one of these for sale a dealer with the highest reputation in Sydney; I didn't take note of the price.
Has anybody any idea of what the value of the piece pictured may be?

Did they make a lot of them as they did with the French patterns of 1848, or are they much scarcer than the French patterns that are dated 10 years earlier?

Sel, Krause catalogs it at 100 USD. Two auctions are also around that number, the last being in 2011. My research shows that this ESSAI was made in large quantities. However, I can't find mintage figures and some specifics such as weight. I would love to know those two figures.
I would say it's not a rare ESSAI, but hard to find.I haven't seen many in the US. Maybe a different story in Europe.

Hey,

I have seen a 20 cent Essai with a price of 75euro.
Of the 20 cent are there 29 different coins (most time a other metal).

The 10 cent is more rare. But the price is more or less the same.
Of the 10 cent are there 5 know.

Thank you Aernout. This is exactly what I was looking for.
I'm going to keep the 10 Centimes and look for the 20 centimes. I've read that many of the 20 centime ESSAI's are counter-stamped with a number. It was a way for the mint to keep track of the different test ESSAI's that they were making. I thought that was kind of neat.

Your welcome.

Indeed, of the 20 cent you have coins with and without numbers.
Also the 5 cent excist ;)

Also this type of coin didn't win the contest, a other type of coin went in circulation in 1860 (but from the same designer).

Example: 20 cent with numbres 18 and 4, also a 5 cent 1859
