Fortin write-up: http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/...cvarpage.htm

Notes: This is an example of F-101, easily attributed with the 2 die defects on Liberty's right arm (viewer's left) and the Type 1 reverse. The final CC minted dime.

Note: After striking quarters in 1878, San Francisco didn't produce any until 1888. They were busy striking silver dollars.

1878 $3 MS66

http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/25252397/

Larger image: http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/25...5697_max.jpg

Note: Most common $3 gold piece. I believe I read in Doug Winters' book on this series that the Mint struck these in anticipation of demand when specie payments resumed. The mintage figures after this declined sharply.

Trade Dollars were struck in 1878 at all three mints for the final time (Philly proofs and business strikes in San Francisco and Carson City). A new design burst on the scene: The Morgan dollar.
