I am curious about how many of our community collect both notes and coins. To be a little more specific. Do you typically specialize in coins or notes and then casually pick up some of the other items. Or is there more a tendency to appreciate the beauty of one but collect the other.

I ask because it appears to me there is some crossover but not a lot. I am not asking what I should collect, simply curious about what you all are collecting (or not collecting).

So to answer my question for those interested. I love US coins. I also find some of the foreign notes to be simply amazing and beautiful. So I focus on coin. And casually pick up notes that interest me.

Thanks
Scott

scopru, like you, I am mainly a coin collector and only casually collect paper money at this time. While I would love to collect both, the ol' bank account can't afford another full-time collection!

I agree about the bank account!! As a hobby it can certainly add up fast. But that in part is what has made me focus on what I like most vs. Everthing that looks cool.

I'm so wishy-washy..

Sometimes it's coins, then I lose interest in it and veer towards paper money. Sometimes it's stamps.

I think I like currency the best though because of the variety and each piece is really unique.

I'm a full-time paper money collector and a part-time coin collector. I originally started off doing coins a while back, but slowly got into paper money and now it has become my main focus (addiction). When I'm at coin shows I seek out any paper money first, coins come secondary.

I enjoy the variety there is with paper money; Collecting by district, signatures, denomination, star notes, fancy serials, etc. The artwork on the old bills are absolutely phenomenal and it's very awe inspiring to hold a piece of paper in your hand that is well over 100 years old.

I like to be able to be able to see a goal and be able to complete a part of my collection, so I have decided on 'modern' circulation type coins, because then I can have an achievable objective.

I started stamps as a kid, but quickly became aware that you could never collect every stamp of a single country, let alone several countires.

I love the designs on paper money, but it is the higher face value that keeps me from doing more than keeping the occasional eye-catching bill. I think it was when the old 50 dollar bill was in circulation in the late 70's (in Canada) that I realized that no matter how beautiful a note is, as a 12 year old, I would never be able to keep a 50 in my collection.
So basically, my goal oriented self focuses on completing coin sets, but appreciates the odd cool bill that comes along.

Question-About-Notes-And-Coins
P.S. The $50 bill is still not in my collection.

I started collecting mostly coins, but after getting some bank notes from family, I have slowly been adding notes that interest me.

Great answers folks...

Fuzzy - I think I saw in another forum you have a view of Stone Mt from your home. You ever walk up that big chunk of rock? I have been there a couple times and walked up it once. Doesn't look nearly as far as it is from the bottom!

I have walked up a few times, maybe twice in childhood and twice as an adult.

I collect both coins & notes.

I agree with Amwyll: You can't have everything, so we all have to define our collections.
I have most of the notes that I want, and the others are mostly beyond my present means ...
But the coins I seek - there are still many that I want, and I live in hope of finding them at prices that I can afford.
