Hey guys. So I just started getting into ancient coins and was wondering what is the main Julius Caesar coin to collect? I'm mainly looking for one of the coins minted during his lifetime and under his rule. Like the way Alexander the Great's would be the coin with hercules on the front and Zeus on the back. What is the most iconic coin that fits this description? Sorry if this is really stupid of a question. I'm clearly a noob. I appreciate the help guys. Thanks for your time

Portrait coin if you can afford one, otherwise the elephant reverse and the Aeneas reverse types are your best bets. They are relatively cheaper and more common but they were struck under his authority during his life.

I'm away from my PC right now but I can link you to the Wildwinds page with many of his coin types including lifetime portrait issues.

Definitely a portrait coin if you an afford it :)

My second favorite is the traveling mint elephant denarius pictured above. There are two elephant styles, one somewhat realistic and the other clumsily rendered and less realistic but less common. The Vcoins example posted by echizento shows the less common elephant type.

There are many other popular portraitless denarii as well.

If I recall correctly, Julius Caesar bronzes are scarce and a bit pricey. Of course, his aureii are quite expensive.

From what I've seen if you can find one in good condition for 80k you should do whatever you have to buy it and flip it.

There have been EID MARs for less than $80K but they were in very good condition and this was a handful of years ago. Prices have since escalated. There was one recently which failed to sell, likely because of concerns over authenticity. Another such example is coming up and it will be interesting to see if it also fails to sell.

I would LOVE a portrait, but can't afford it at the moment. I have an elephant on order, due to be delivered when I get home. At least the elephant was the first coin issued in his name.

Sorry!
