Hi all

I am new to coin collecting and just received a 8R 1740 Philip V coin which I would appreciate peoples views on. I am told it is silver however have yet to confirm this but also curious given the condition of graphics on the coin.

Views regarding authenticity would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Sorry, but I believe this is a cast copy.

Bill,

Thank you for taking the time to review and reply. Can you elaborate on the reasons why it may be a cast copy, what are the tell tail signs to look for.

Thanks.

The very rough surfaces between the letters and devices (which should be smooth) are the tip-off. A very common copy, I believe.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,
Bill

Cast copy, agreed.
Salvaged coins don't look like that, and still have sharp details.

Could be a much later high tin forgery issue (not modern).

Here is a 1744 that was shot,(by a small cal. I would guess), and found in water. You can see the "sea salvage" damage on it.
