As far as denominations I always loved the dime. After coming across a decent load of silver halves at my bank I like them a lot more. I've been trading them for older halves slowly at close to 1 to 1.

Nathan,

The coin was sold with large clear pictures. I didn't put a price on the coin and then wait for someone to bite. I started the auction at $0.99. Several people were bidding into the last few minutes, and into the upper amounts.

This is what coins like this sell for continuously on ebay. The only description I put in the add was "1926-s Judge condition for yourself".

How did I feel when I found out the coin was junk? I didn't find out the coin was junk. I found out that forum members here thought it was junk, but when the coin sold for exactly what I thought it would, I was reassured that they were wrong.

I don't ever see any Peace dollars at all sell on ebay for bullion value. They sell for a premium wether cleaned, polished, holed or whatever.

I already stated that I do not normally sell on ebay, but sold this one because I wanted to see if the forum members here who claimed the coin was worth only bullion value were correct.

Because the coin was a less common date, it sold for a slightly higher premium than the more common dates.

No matter what any books, dealers, or experts may say, the value IS what people will pay. A civil war era wooden chair may be appraised at $50,000, but if no one is ever willing to pay more than $1000 the appraisal is a bit meaningless, and in the same way, an old sword may be called "worthless" because it's handle has been replaced, but if it continuously sells at an auctions for huge sums of money, the original appraisal was incorrect.

Anyway, I am not going to discuss this topic any further, because at this point we're all just .

My first love are the Great Britain bronze pennies issued from 1860 to 1970. A fascinating series, lots of varieties, many obtainable cheaply but a few extreme rarities, and I remember them in change when I was a kid. Also they look beautiful in MS with lots of lustre - or what a British collector would call GEF!

I'm afraid that my collection went out of control many years ago and I now put aside almost anything, but my second favourite series would have to be Morgan dollars! Of course, they were designed by an Englishman!

The "beating a dead horse" is the first I have actually seen in a forum here :P but I like collecting one of each type of coin. But if I had to choose, I do like the ATB Quarters since there are different designs to collect and look at.

I prefer Mexican coinage.

La Casa de Moneda de México is the oldest mint in the Americas. est.1535. It's history is fascinating. The history of Mexican coinage is the history of many world currencies. Mexican silver shaped the history of the world.

My opinion on ebay ? It is more a gauge of how, ignorant, uninformed and downright stupid too many people are and less a gauge of what anything is worth.

I was in the retail Ladies and children clothing business for many years.

Was always a mystery why a particular garment would, or would not sell.

For about 3 months we would sell at the normal price; then start a 3 month REDUCTION in (all) prices. Then
I would DUMP my overage to a closeout buyer.

Some times an item I thought was a DOG, would sell at 4-10 times what I paid for it. (At the beginning of the season.)

Other items I thought were very nice retail goods ended up in the CLOSE OUT BUYERS pile.

I was a very small store front, but at my best I was selling 30,000+ items per year.

I agree that buyers are funny, weird, strange fickle, etc.

But as long as they were putting money in my cash registers, I would not think of them in negative words.

You can get good deals on ebay from either of the following:

People who don't know much about the coins they sell
Honest sellers whose items were somehow just not looked at.

Yes indeed.

Couple that with a sea full of buyers on the SAME level of market values.

Meaning? Many coins are offered at below market values. YAHOOOOOO

People see littleton or catalog prices (which, incidentally are higher than retail prices) and then look at ebay prices. Then they buy out of impulse.

I've changed my mind since I started this topic.

I'm now interested in primarily Peace dollars, and large cents of all types except for Coronet heads and classic large cents.

In another few days I will probably move on to something else.

I occasionally buy a U.S. or World coin if it strikes me as particularly beautiful, take this 1872 dime as an example.

Do-You-Favor-A-Particular-Coin?

Other than that I stick to ancients! So mush history and mystery in such a small piece of metal! (And believe me some are very small) Give us a chance at the ancient coin section, we might be a little different than most collectors, but once you go ancient you never go back.

To put a slightly different slant on it, I like shillings.

Firstly because I'm old enough to remember spending the things (here in the UK they were replaced by decimal currency in 1971)

Secondly I found a book in the library called "The Splendid Shilling" which was all about the history of the coin. That was my 'guide' to collecting at first.

After a while I realised I didn't have the budget for shillings from all reigns and countries and decided to specialise on those from the reign of Charles I of Britain (1625-1649)

Still working on it!

And yes, like pretty much everyone else, I have a n 'accumulation' of other coins. Coins from travels. A small side collection of coins featuring the Republican symbol 'Marianne' .. but I only really collect Charles I shillings. See my avatar!
