I don't understand why everyone feels like the mintage needs to always meet demand. Kids weren't excited to collect baseball cards back in my youth because your favorite player was in every pack. What made it fun was the chase. By producing coins/sets to intentionally be BELOW demand, I think, would make people more excited to collect coins. Things get very boring and hum-drum if every coin is easy to get. There is no sense of accomplishment in it if it s too easy

from a collector's perspective. But from a business perspective, why wouldn't you want to sell as many of an item as the market would bear?

I don't expect the Mint to meet demand, but I do expect the Mint to be able to figure out it only has 50,000 sets available, so if I order a set and those other sets are not available, they should be able to tell me something better than "BACKORDER" for the next month or two. If they sell out, ok, but keeping people in limbo with no follow-up is not very good service. Even just an auto-generated email or something would be nicer than wondering and twiddling my thumbs.

I agree with shark. My 12/10 order went from "processing", and the money came out of my bank... to "backorder", and the money later went back into my bank account. Now my order sits, forever unchanged, on hold, without any explanation. Something else that was weird... When the money came out of the bank, there was a 'paper trail'. When the money went back into the bank account, the paper trail disappeared, as though the transaction never took place. Normally the debit would remain, and then a credit would show on my bank statement... aka "paper trail". This transaction just vanished, even though the money came out, cleared, and was out of my account for a couple weeks! Plenty long enough to make it a complete transaction that should have required a 'trail'.

I too hate how the mint operates - they just put a hold on your money for 5 business days (credit cards) and regardless if your order is ready for shipment or if it is for an item that is out of stock. I'm not aware of another business that gets away with such shady practices. Well, it's the US Government, so that explains it...

Well crap...if only I hadn't burned that couple of hundred bucks yesterday, I could have bid on this. But at the same time, if someone gives him $150K for it, well, good for the seller, I suppose.

For a seller whose feedback is approaching 5,000.... I really hope that was a typo on their part.

What is meant by position A?

Very interesting..... Even if someone offer 1% of his asking price, he still make quite a lot of money.

Quote: What is meant by position A? As far as I am aware, this refers to the position of the inscription on the rim. It can be either A or B, depending if you can read it with the reverse facing upwards or downwards. This would be "A": And this would be "B": Of course, what we don't know are the mintage numbers of A & B for this issue. But I would assume it's around 50:50, given that it's more or less chance the way these were minted.

"Do I think the coin will sell for the Buy It Now price, NO, but it's fun to list something with such a big number! However, given the rarity of this coin, I figured I would consider serious offers. If the coin ends up selling for $200, that's great!"

$200 would be a bargain if I'm honest. But I doubt the seller would accept such an offer. Anyone care to try to submit such an offer? :)

with Unholyroller. The thrill of the hunt. If the Mint wants to create a culture of collectors checking the mint website frequently, have more 50K products.
