I have been goig through 1 of my tubs of shrapnel and I came across this 1993 penny with all the brown removed from elizabeths portrait, I have taken a picture with another 93 1p for comparison.

BEFORE YOU ASK, I havnt touched it and there is no evidence of scrubbing whatsoever, the detail on liz is very crisp, almost proof like.
Any thoughts as to how this has happened ?
TIA.

Hi Augsburger, to me it looks like the copper coating hasn't been applied properly. The crown and the lettering have copper on them & on the bottom part of the crown there is 3 rows of dots, oddly the centre row is devoid of coating apart from the last 3 dots. I find it odd because the top & bottom row stand more proud than the middle one.
I have never cleaned a coin so I don't know if this could be achieved with acid, maybe someone will chip in on that.
The portcullis on the other side is normal with a nice patina.
Still shocked to see a silver Elizabeth on a penny.

Hmm... This reminds me of a "cleaning cloth" we got in the jewellers a good few years ago that visually 'silver plated' whatever metal you rubbed it with.
I remember doing a few old style pennies with it. (Oddly enough, it was about 1993 if I recall)

I've just checked the dates, and 1992 was when they first started copper plating steel pennies, so some plating errors may have occured, but judging by the dark areas in the crevices I'd say this is not the likely cause.

Hi RED, interesting point about the cloth but there are certain aspects that make me think it is either a coating error at the mint or someone has manage to strip all the copper coating of the low parts of the coin & elizabeths portrait except her crown and necklace. She looks like she has a gold crown on,
I don't know what to do with it so I will hold it until I get 50 posts and then send it to the 1st person interested in taking a look, could be nothing but at least the postage will be paid by me.

It weighs 3.537g and the other 1p in the pictures weighs 3.560g. The weight is slightly off as you can see, not sure how to explain that other than the copper coating which isn't there would weigh that much.
I think it equates to 23/100th's of a gram, not sure if that's a lot in this case.
