I'm seeing a lot of Justinian coins here, and a couple of Justin II coins - but we're curiously missing a Justin I; someone else might well have a better example and/or a different type, but, well, here's mine...

Alphabetic-Ancients-Game. Alphabetic-Ancients-Game.

Obverse: DN IVSTINVS PP AV, bust right
Reverse: Tyche seated, reverse epsilon left, river god swimming below, all in a temple (?)
Justin I (518-527), pentanummium (5 nummi), Antioch mint

To be honest, the obverse photo don't really do much justice to it - that's a just about fully legible obverse legend you're looking at here, and the bust isn't too bad either - and the reverse photo only blurs the actual strike problems (which are worse than you'd think from seeing the obverse only).

Still, a cool type - one occasionally referred to as the "last pagan Roman coin", in fact (which is kind of true, if we ignore the fact that Justin I was not the last ruler to issue it).

Nice Julia Domna Valecrucis!

It looks like the engraver had the ability to create perspective on the reverse of this coin.... over a thousand years before it was officially discovered.

Thanks Doucet. Yes, he must have had a natural sense for it. It is a beautiful reverse.

, you are right with that one.

They have an interesting series on one of the TV channels here, dealing with the 'Treasures of the Roman Empire'. Last night they showed amongst others mosaics from Roman Lybia, which had perspective in them as well. The commentator made a comment similar to yours, saying that it would be a long time before something similar was created.
