It looks like a single Nummi of 6th century Byzantine Empire, I would guess Justinian but could be as early as Anastasius. Determining the exact emperor will be quite difficult with what is left, This is a great coin and doesn't look much worse than it did when it fell from the dies.

I want to say early Byzantine maybe Anastasius I or Justin I, but there are some aspects of the reverse that don't match up. I think this might be of the type the VK collects. Hopefully he will be along soon to check it out.

Yeah its early Byzantine, a 10 nummi coin. It's late here so I'll see if I can get a more specific attribution sometime tomorrow.

Oh and if possible a clearer photo of the reverse would help in attributing it.

OK, so it's not one of VK's. But I'm still stumped, I can't figure out the mint mark. The regnal year looks like 1 which excludes Justinian I.

Justin II
Obv: DN IVSTINVS PP AVG Rev: Large I, ANNO left, regnal year I to right, cross above (according to the spreadsheet; Nicomedia doesn't have this type with a star above, which is what I'm seeing on this coin) Mint: Nicomedia (mintmark NIK in ex) Ref: SB 370a

So that's what the mint mark is. Good catch VK.

hu, is that coin kind of rare? I don't remember seeing one with a right bust, seems like most are facing...or with justin ii and sophia facing.

VK, you said according to the spreadsheet,Nicomedia does not have that type. What does that mean? Is it counterfeit or is it a new type not seen before? Thank you. Edward M.

That is a nice coin and a super job on the id from VK. I have one of the type that I was lucky enough to salvage from a small lot of mixed coins that I had. Here is mine. 4.05g & 14mm

Jungliston, Although the spreadsheet is a valiant attempt to organize these coin types, no reference is entirely complete. Your coin looks very real, and there is no reason to think otherwise. Your coin type is also owned by MetDet. (see above)
Like anyone just getting into ancient coins it is quite a daunting task to ID them and the late Roman bronzes are no exception.
