I, (probably know as the "Half Dollar Coin Man"), had to cash in some halves once, years ago oddly enough. I forget why, as I usually spend my halves, but this was before I was into halves big time. (Believe it or not, I once thought that the half should be *gasp!* "eliminated" from circulation  , but as time went on, I grew to love that giant 50 cent coin) Anyway, when I cashed those halves in, I rolled them, and there were two rolls of solid Bicentennial halves and a third roll with all but three Bicentennials and I marked the two solid rolls with a letter "X" and the roll with three normal halves with a letter "I" I don't know why I used an "I" on that roll, but I explained to the teller that, if any collectors come in, that those three rolls together, were mark as almost three solid rolls of Bicentennial halves. My brothers always hoard Bicentennial quarters, but they stopped taking my Bicentennial halves, as they are just too common, and my brothers either could not afford to keep all of those halves, or they just didn't want them. Now then, who keeps, and who spends their Bicentennial "Ikes"?  Edited by Fox

I kept all the bi-cents from the 10 boxes+ of halves I got and it was a little over a box worth, so 10% of halves found were bi-cents.
I don't think I have ever spent an Ike.

I too think you should grab every one you see. That way eventually there will be so few around that they might be worth more than $0.50. Maybe even $0.51.

How about $.50 1/2? They could reissue the Half Cent, just so you could properly buy a half dollar with a slight premium. Edited by Fox

Neither have I. And I suspect the same is for half dollars for most people, Bicentennial or otherwise. This is why they don't circulate. Going back to the original question of whether one should save or spend Bicentennial Halves, just go out and buy a few rolls of half dollars. See that about a quarter of them or so are probably dated 1776-1976 and you should understand that they are nothing rare or special. I think the percentage of Bicentennial quarters in the wild is less than that of the half or dollar coin just because the quarter circulates and because of that there is a natural attrition of coins. With the fact that almost no one uses half dollars and even less spend Ikes and that the Mint made so many of the Bicentennials makes them a much larger percentage of the larger coins when they are found. |

Oh, I have spent plenty of half dollars in my time. Never, ever an Eisenhower dollar though.  |

The only 1976 halves I keep are the proofs and the silver ones. I throw back the rest.

I agree with all of the above the only ones I keep are the silverl halves I did keep a few proofs though.

I spend Ikes every once in a while, and for some reason, I actually hate spending SBAs more than I hate spending Ikes. My brother usually buys my Ikes from me. Edited by Fox

If almost uncirculated hang on to a few of them. Keep in mind that recently I viewed a few articles that stated over 1/3rd of bicentennial coins are no longer in circulation due to hoarding.

I try not to hoard Ike's. I do however have a complete collection of circulated Ike dollars of buisness strikes. |

Spend bicentennials, except keep a few really nice BU pieces, or nicely toned BU pieces.
