The only coin I like ... is the colour silver dollar coin. I don't like it enough to buy the silver proof set
Agreed. The coloured version of the SD looks good but not worth 229.95 for the set. Nothing interesting about the other issues and the JAM coins really feel too "American" to me. Not necessarily a bad thing but they just don't feel right as an RCM offering.
I only ordered the proof SD. Normally I would wait and buy it at a discount but the reduced mintage (40k down to 20k) means that it will go fast. I think at 20k, it would be the lowest mintage regular SD since '48. (please correct me if I'm wrong about that).
I need some SD to complete 5 coin box. Four already there, and the 5-th has to be exceptional, or by design, or importance (theme, I mean). So this one, with the Canada flag could be very nice. But there is no warranty, that for example the "WWII Victory" related SD (I sure RCM will struck one in 2015) will not be better.
Will take a risk, and will wait till the end of year, I believe one of the 2015 will be the last in the current box.
Silver sets and silver NCLT version of circulation coins:
Please, do not be confused, now the comparison with RAM.
Paid attention, that RAM issued (till the 2014) the Annual Silver Proof Set, where all the coins struck from Pure silver. Nice idea, but off cause the set is expensive, $200+ From the 2013, they started to issue Silver NCLT version of circulation coins in separate. And this is brilliant idea! Affordable and low mintage, and the package very nice.
In addition, discovered the following: Tried to search for 2014 RAM Silver set - and I didn't find it. Means, the silver singe coins - these only that distributed in that format. Can you imagine: Mintage of 1.000 only!
So I have 5c and 50c with mintage 1000 coins - excited.
Why I am speaking about RAM here? Cause I want RCM doing the same. Not commissioned $500 5oz coins with mintage of 1.500 (they also beautiful), but affordable $40-$80 silver circulation coins with the low mintage.
I think it's just the idea of commemorating/celebrating elected officials on coins. Generally, that is not something we do in Canada.
On the other hand, the US mint routinely use their presidents for coins and other business us them all sorts of promotion.
Seems to me it's a slippery slope. We've all seen George Washington or Abe Lincoln selling used cars, mattresses and furniture in the US. I'd hate to see that here. I guess I just don't want to see PET or the Chief on a coin or a tv ad any time soon.
Along that same lines, I was disappointed that the Ottawa Senators decided this year to make mascots of some of our historic leaders. There's nothing quite like watching cartoon caricatures of historical figures acting like buffoons at a hockey game. Of course they 'borrowed' the idea from the Washington Nationals.
Maybe I just need to get used to it. I mean we have a chain of pubs here named after D'Arcy McGee, a bar called Sir John A's and even renamed a major parkway after JAM a couple of years ago. The roadway had a perfectly apt name but for some reason we needed to change it. And of course the major highway in Ontario is named after two fathers of confederation as is our airport. I can't even get started on what they did with the bridge in Barrhaven.
@CC-Ottawa: Thanks for the explanation, now I understand!
It's definitely true that the most "popular" US presidents are often used as spokesmen for advertisers. I guess since I've grown up with it, I have become immune to it and hardly take notice of it anymore. I didn't realize that Canada didn't do the same for its PMs and other prominent political leaders.

Well I think Mike Duffy would have been funny with a big head on the ice, or maybe Rob Ford although he was just a "Major" would you buy a coin with Mike Duffy or Rob Fords mug on it?
Ya only one thing that interested me in this January release and I ordered it, a bit high of a mintage but nice set. Maybe I should order a few more...hmmmmmm Plus I was born in 1965 , I have a bad feeling I will over spend on coins this year...
