Hello,
I would like to know what the pages inside Whitman and Dansco albums are made out of. Are they different? Is one better quality?
Thank you

Dunno what materials glues and clear plastics Danscos and Whitmans are made from. I believe the clear plastic sheet that is used is not PVC, and is the same material used in some shirt boxes and is harmless for coins.
I prefer 2x2's in Mylar or polypropylene album pages, because I can write on the 2x2's for my own records: how much I paid and when, plus a short identification. You cannot do this with Whitmans, Danscos, slabs or capsules. Most importantly for my purposes, I consider with the storage and display method I use, that the coins are best protected from a physical and chemical viewpoint.
I don't use labels, but a small self adhesive label with printed information could be stuck to the 2x2, for better appearance of your collection.
The approach I use is not the best for everyone, other priorities may be considered more highly. For example, you cannot accommodate slabs or capsules in a Whitman or Dansco. I am confident enough to grade ALL of my coins, be they ancient or modern, and so don't need slabs for grading. PCGS photograde for U.S. coins is a great resource to help you in this regard.

Sorry, my question was worded weirdly. I simply want to know what the actual pages are made out of. Cardboard, plastic, faux leather etc...

Cardboard is the general answer. An impressed veneer leatherette surfacing provides the surface finish to the cardboard, much like a book cover. What is more important is what is the chemistry of the materials used, inasmuch as the way they may affect the coins in the album, and how they are physically protected.
Danco and Whitman albums have been made for decades, I have not any doubt at all, that they are made of materials that have the minimum impact on the coins in them. Those materials include the glues, printing, cardboard and clear plastic.
Their continued market success over decades is testament enough for them to be perfectly suitable for the purpose for which they were intended.
For me, I think that coins in 2x2's in non PVC album pages offer better physical and chemical protection, but that is my opinion for me. 'Press in' rebates to receive the coins offer the possibility of imparting fingerprints on the coins, and the possibility of fine dust and cardboard particles getting between the suface of a coin and the clear plastic window that slides over them.
That is not a problem with lower valued coins, but some may find that a problem with coins in high condition.

It is hard to say exactly as there may be different terms for the products in different regions of the world.
My understanding is: The bulk of the page is made of paperboard. It is a tan-brown paper product. I'm not sure about whitman but the danscos are skinned with textured vinyl. The clear inserts are often referred to as acetate but I am not sure that is the type of plastic they are actually made of.

In reality this question could really only be answered by the manufacturer. And in most instances, you would not get accurate or complete results. This is due to the normal proprietary documents that govern materials used in their products. Dansco is made in the USA so their products material may be easier to find or acquire. Whitman is now made in China and I highly doubt the Chinese would tell you what they really use for materials. Whitman used to be made in the Mid West here in the USA. However, some time ago the company sold out to first their employees and then later to Harris. I've tried to ask Harris if all their products are now made in China but they refused to reply. Not sure why they did that. The famous Red Book by Whitman Publishing is made in the USA though.

Based upon the prices that Dansco albums sell for new, I'd say Silver!

Clear acetate plastic is harmless for coins.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I have been trying to get a hold of something to replace the acetate in one of my dansco albums. Does anybody have an idea about what thickness I should be looking for? Would something like this work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Clear-Ace...em339f22cb82

Thanks fuzzy! Does anyone have any idea about how thick the stock slides are? I'm hoping someone has access to a caliper. I'd hate to get some sheets that are thinner than I'd like :)

For anyone curious, I wound up buying these http://www.ebay.com/itm/391081131383 Without a caliper, they look to be the right thickness to replace the ones that come stock with a dansco. Additionally, buying the 11"*14" size means that I can get one page's worth of slides (front and back) out of each sheet. This was really the only place that I could find the right thickness of actual cellulose acetate sheets at a reasonable price. Hope this helps somebody! I'll let you all know how the sheets work out.

So how did they fit? I do not have a caliper to measure mine. They look a little flimsy in the photos from ebay, but that could be from being uncut.

I should be getting them in a couple of days! According to what I found online, a standard sheet of copy paper is about 0.003 inches thick, so these should be about 3 times that. At the bottom of the ebay page it does say that they will send free samples, but I figured I'd go ahead and order. I'll keep you all updated!

I do not think the thickness will matter much, unless your pages are stretched out. I think they will work well for you. Do let us know for certain.
