Cool Slur is a gal!! I just figured Slur is so close to Sir.'well Slur pleased to make your acquaintance. Pm sometime on your Christmas break. I'd like to be able to chat with more gals and share our own perspective on coins. I'm also intrigued by the little you've written about your home currency.

Another female collector here.... As pocketchange mentioned earlier I am busy with a baby and life... Yes he will be a year old on Boxing Day and I'm gearing up to head back to work.... Which won't be for long as #2 is baking in the oven. I'm 37yo and when I go to coin shows there is one female dealer that recognizes me all the time... Guys are either oblivious or don't take me serious,,,, which can work to my advantage when I cherry pick their stock. Lol.

Darn I could see any info. I must of been under a rock, I don't remember hearing about this. What were some of the prizes? It's not showing me anything beyond the title.

When it comes to female vs male coin collecting, I would break it into non-NCLT and NCLT collecting.
Non-NCLT women collectors - less than 5%
NCLT women collectors - 25-30%. I rarely see women coin collectors at coin shows but I see plenty of women at the Vancouver Mint Boutique. When there is a lineup for coins like the glass butterfly, I saw maybe 3 or 4 out of 10 people lining up were women.

MoneyPenny I think you are right with your statement in regards to NCLT and bring up a good point. Females that buy NCLT I think dabble in circulating coins but more of a "put it in the sock drawer" thing. Older tokens, 50 cent pieces etc.

Throughout the world across all genres men are the collectors. Be it coins, guns, antiques or Barbie Dolls. It is most often the male who collects things with no use.
as with all things a general statement doesnot and cannot cover all but more often than not woman collect useful things. Such as shoes, foodstuffs, clothing, and things intended to be used. I have read several theories about why but I think they are less than accurate.
Just accept the fact that more men collect useless things ie money that cannot be spent. While more women collect useful things ie shoes (and yea one day she will find the skirt that will go perfectly with that pair of Dartmounth Green pumps.)

I'm a female coin collector and I thoroughly enjoy it!
It's been a year since I got my first coin and I haven't looked back. I first became interested in coins after looking at my dad's collection.
I collect because there are so many coins that it's a hobby that will last a lifetime!
I'm working on getting my friend into the hobby. I got her a silver quarter for Christmas. She showed interest in my small Newfoundland collection.
As Pocket Change mentioned about coffee, I find myself starting to take the money I would normally spend on going to Starbucks or Tim Hortons and putting it aside for coins. I can make my coffee at home :). Doing this helped me get my Tribute Penny.
I certainly hope more females discover the endless opportunities in this hobby!

Female collector here! Been collecting since I was a kid, more seriously though in the last 6 years. I don't think I've met another female collector in person!

@Coin Chick: That kind of behaviour bothers me so much. The first time my wife and I went to a coin show, we went around to meet with and chat with the dealers. Whenever my wife would say something or ask a question, they would always, without fail, only speak to me and answer to me. SO insulting.

Universalcoins, I have a similar experiences when it comes to talking about planes. I have a boy friend (we are not dating or anything, just friends) who shared my interest in commercial aviation. I am the more talkative of the two, but he gets addressed more often than I do when talking about aviation stuff with others.
I once picked up a book on Spitfire (one of the few war planes I can recognise out of the corner of my eye), turned a few pages, and put it back down. The guy behind the table said, "Do you know what this is?"
