What the best price (bang for the buck)...pun intended... for getting a coin certified by ICCS, PCGS or other means in the Ottawa area? Can it even be done around here, or do I have to go to Toronto?

For ICCS you need to ship to Toronto. For PCGS you need to get to a PCGS dealer. Or there's CCCS in Montreal. http://www.canadiancoincertificatio...m/index4.php I wouldn't suggest going with any other TPG than one of those 3.

NGC uses a different range of the scale than ICCS so you have to be careful. For example, an NGC MS64 is probably the same as an ICCS MS64. An NGC MS66 is almost always better than an ICCS MS65 and might get as good as an ICCS MS66. NGC MS67 might be the same as an ICCS MS66 or it might be a bit better but is probably not as good as an ICCS MS67. You see more NGC MS68s than ICCS MS68s and so on.

I also believe NGC & CCCS are ideal for grading and noting errors/varieties compared to the other TPGs. Generally, whenever I send out Canadian coins, I prefer to send to a Canadian TPG, which leaves two options: ICCS & CCCS.

kuh_85 thanks for adding CCCS in this list, I find CCCS is too often left out! With soft and hard holder, the new stiffer paper money holder, the website, the free online pop report and the online verification, it has a lot to offer collectors.

Don't forget that since early 2014 CCCS is grading up to 70 for modern Proof and Specimen from the RCM.

Glad to see a professional graders presence on the forum. It's too bad you'll have to keep most of your comments to yourself Stay away from the grading section

Vandord,

Both ICCS or CCCS will be the best bang for the buck for Canadian coins both in terms of price per coin and shipping. The only comment I have to make (maybe things have improved these days) is the excessive turnaround times from CCCS. If you do want to submit coins to either NGC or PCGS in the Ottawa area, I can do NGC for you and Alliance Coins in Almonte can do PCGS. Alternatively if you have many coins to submit you can get your own membership at either (PCGS or NGC) and submit on your own. You also have ANACS which is a good resource for problem coins which neither NGC or PCGS will numerically grade and no membership is required.

I would like to see a lot more CCCS graded coins on ebay and in dealer ads.
