Probably quite a few Spanish colonial reales, as they were the predominant coins of the early United States. Most contracts were written in Spanish milled "dollars" in that time frame. Banknotes in same Spanish dollars were common as well. Remember that the Spanish real was the world's reserve currency in 1795.

Apparently, in 1855, they were cleaned (with acid) before being put back in and in the ground.
If there are any MS coins in there, they would most definitely be problem coins.
The NE Shilling would be an incredible find but I'm not holding my breath.
Be cool to find a Classic gold coin though or MS Massachusetts Cent!

I was thinking the same regarding the acid cleaning If there are any paper items in there they are likely destroyed, the coins are likely to be damaged , also eagerly awaiting the opening of this thing hopefully they provide some decent images of the contents

I'm sure we'll see some very cool MS coins come out of this box

Or some worn corroded pieces of junk. Quite often the coins I've seen come out of time capsules have been well worn specimens.

Gold coins are the better choice for a time capsule since they won't corrode

Hello,

I do hope that this article is accurate.

And if it is, keep your eyes and ears tuned in 'somewhere' for Tues., the 6th, '14:

PS: Maybe someone out there can clarify the 'somewhere' piece of the puzzle.

Well, I assume 1795 technology was a bit primitive, so I wonder how well the capsule was sealed over 200 years? I wonder if the coins are environmentally damaged or tarnished or anything?

A lot of times they would use a copper box and lead solder it shut.

Do you suppose if they put the time capsule back, they will use modern preservation techniques on what is in there, plus what they add?

Just read a news article that popped up on the local news and said they found at least 24 coins.

"The collection of coins recovered from the time capsule included half-cent, one-cent, half-dime, 10-cent and 25-cent coins. Another set of coins included a pine tree shilling from 1652 and a copper medal showing George Washington."

I took these back in April and had totally forgot to post them until now. Everything has been put back into the time capsule along with a few new things.
