That's a great story and an awesome find! Good luck with the journey of selling it. I'm jealous too, I metal detected for years growing up and never found anything more valuable than a couple of common date Mercury dimes.

Hey, it's Dr. Tones! I know you on YouTube, Dirt Fishing America. I think it will come back as VF details scratched. That is one amazing find though, thanks for sharing.

it would be interesting to see what Rosehill coin shop would offer you for it. Auction houses charge a fairly steep amount.

Quote: I'm just hoping it doesn't come back ungradable If it's not genuine, they won't slab it. If genuine it will be assigned a details grade and noted for the environmental damage (porosity) and the scratch. Still an AWESOME find. Congrats.

The fact that you guys feel it would be graded makes me feel a little better. What's the least I should accept for it?

Dan at Rosehill is a fair guy. He should give you an honest opinion of the coins value. See what his offer is and weigh whether or not it is fair. Grading, auction fees , shipping with insurance are costs that would reduce your net amount. Cost you nothing to get a quote. I think he used to grade for PCGS so he should be able to tell if its genuine.

I'll take it in and have him take a look. He's not the same Dan from treasure valley coin exchange is he? Or is everyone involved with coin dealing named Dan? ;)

Great Collections has NO seller fees for coins that sell for over $1000. I've sold many coins through them and received good results. It is a must to have it in a TPG.

his name is Dan Brady I believe. I think he is co-owner of Rosehill. Let me know what he says! I think they might be closed on Wednesday.

the no seller fee option sounds attractive as well.

Assuming it's genuine - I see no reason to doubt - it'll grade. TPG's don't bodybag genuine coins any more. That gouge is killer, though, guaranteeing a Details grade. I don't know where these values are coming from - in the real world, 1901-S in VF Details is $5000 at the highest end and I don't think it gets perceived as "high end" with that gouge. That's about a $1000 scratch. These are commonly found in Details slabs - Heritage has 15 in VF, 8 of which are Details - and the price skyrockets in a "righteous" slab to a far larger degree than many other issues. The demand for original examples far exceeds the supply. It definitely deserves a PCGS slab and a home at one of the formal numismatic auction houses like Heritage, Stack's or Great Collections. Chances are, for this coin any of them would handle the logistics of having it submitted as part of the consignment process.
