Great find and thread! My guess is $12,000 or so.

Good luck with the auction! Personally, I think it's a shame that the auction description doesn't talk about how the coin was found or explain what the "damage" to the coin is, but I guess with a slabbed coin it is what it is.

By all means I am no blazing genius, but I'm guessing that some high roller will buy this coin if the price is right, remove it from the current holder, send it off to be repaired (ie - have the scratch removed/mitigated) and then resubmit the coin to NGC OR ANACS.
There will always be identifying markers on that particular coin so we should be able to identify it when it shows up at auction at Heritage or Stacks in 6 to 18 months (without the scratch, of course!). I'd also guess that the new holder will say "altered surfaces" or something similiar. "Altered surfaces" does not sound near as bad as "damaged".
The coin doctors are pretty good. Nothing surprises me.

Thanks MorganGrader! And good luck to you in the auction! As far as posting the story behind it Ian felt hesitant only because he thought it might be off putting to some collectors. It would have been easier to justify the damage though. However, I think with the advent of social media, all interested buyers probably already know the back story.

And if not, DrTones, your story could become part of Numismatic Legend with a little publicity. This could be an interesting article for the Barber Coin Collectors' Journal. "Digging Barber Treasure" would be a dandy title. With a cover photo of your find. Just my "Contributing Editor's" opinion. (No kidding. - I have written a few. And I still have the title.) I managed to get the photo and story about the 1904 Nickel into the December 2014 edition. Link: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/..&whichpage=1And it never hurts that the CCF always gets mentioned. Publicity works both ways. Someone else mentioned an article for the BCCS Journal a while back. Care to collaborate?

Matt, your link above does not work...something about a "404" error.

I'd love to do an article. I've done several for treasure mags and am currently doing an article on it for western and eastern treasure.

DrTones. I have contacted the BCCS editor. If you will kindly change your profile to allow email I'll send you what I have written so far. It will need your approval. Hate2Wait, https://goccf.com/t/187125I took it from a search of the CCF site. Not sure what went wrong.

Excellent :-)
Chances of it not being genuine were almost 0.
Good luck!

Very fascinating reading this thread. A super find! Now it is up to the collectors of Barber quarters to determine what they think, by the amount of their bids, the true worth of this great rarity is.
