You will get serious offers. It can't hurt, what are listing fees? 30 cents per item or something? I'd still want it certified prior to sale, mostly for my own safety. Mostly due to my concerns about somebody possibly swapping the coin then returning it.

What's the rush, MorganGrader? Dear Doctor: take your time. Assuming that the coin is authentic it will STILL be authentic a week or a month or a year from now. There are no rolls of 01-S quarters being held. It will always command a nice price. Dare I say, enjoy your good fortune? We CCF members are certainly enjoying your fortunate find! Keep us posted.

I agree with matthewvincent. Enjoy the good fortune and take the time to get it authenticated. Right now, the market is a bit soft so you maybe able to hold out for a better offer. It's not like you have much capital tied up in it. I'd like to see it in the Barber Coin Collectors Society Journal as well.

I am not saying the OP should sell it via ebay, but ebay offers will give you a good idea of where the market is on this particular item. Granted, many of the offers will be from dealers, but you should also have some offers from collectors as well.

The ebay idea may be a very good option, get it graded by PCGS, say it comes back at XF details, list it as Best offer starting at perhaps 15k, see what offers come in, I certainly think you would get more than the $7200, just remember you have to factor in ebay and paypal fees along with that... Again, that would all be contingent on XF details... Here's another point I don't think anyone has brought up, while I have no doubts on the authenticity, is it possible PCGS may grade it as a code 86, authenticity unverifiable? I had a conversation at a show with a collector who had metal detected an 1877 IH, severely corroded and was hoping for a details grade, but they gave it an 'authenticity unverifiable' grade... Could this be a possible outcome for this coin if sent in to grade?

This coin will end in a details slab, I have zero questions about the authenticity of it. The only reason it would be 86'ed would be if the corrosion was so bad that it made the date and/or mintmark unreadable, or the pickup points for the die unverifiable. None of those are the case here.

Just throwing that out there, I have never actually personally seen a piece they have done that with, would actually like to see a piece that had been 86'ed sometime... I also have no questions about the authenticity of this piece...

If PCGS does that (and they won't), then NGC followed by ANACS.

"This coin will end in a details slab," SO WHAT? If it is genuine then someone will love it. That it was found in the ground somewhere near Boise carries its own cache. Are we really reduced to a dollar and cents discussion or can we agree that DrTones has had a bit of good luck and that we are lucky to share it? And that we all eagerly follow the eventual outcome of the saga? (You wouldn't kid us about actually finding it, would you Doctor?)

I'm going to put my neck out as one with bigger doubts as to its authenticity. I understand how acidic soil can act upon a coin, and I could see such pitting on the devices. My worry are several "pimples" and other protrusions I see in the fields around the rim where they are common with some modern construction methods. DrTones, could you please tell me if the areas I've circled are indented *into* the coin or are protruding *out* of it?

No. I have been known to kid around but this is the real deal. The "great collections" option is looking better and better. Tell ya who I WON'T be doing business with... Heritage. What a joke. I sent in an email submission with the same pics you all have seen and I received a very blunt message stating that my coin is almost certainly a fake and that if I "wanted" I could send it in anyway so they could have it graded. Not sure who they have in charge of thumbing through their submissions but I can tell you they have poor edicute and even worse coin knowledge. In the submission form I put "found" not sure if maybe I should have elaborated on that but they sure didn't care to. IF/when this coin goes to auction, it will NOT be with Heritage. Very insulted.

Once it's in a PCGS holder, send Heritage a picture and tell them your going with Bowers :p

Stacks and Bowers on the other hand have been very interested and a pleasure to work with. Not one time did they question its authenticity.
