I actually prefer them over Heritage. Heritage has a bit more exposure and name rec.
My friend went up to a Heritage table at Long Beach with some hand written Civil War letters and they basically blew him off when someone walked up with several gold coins. They are all biz and not very personable.

SteveCaruso....Good eye. I looked at the date position, and never really studied the coin much further. I think you have some legitimate questions. I will counter with, there hasn't been a known counterfeit that has had the date position as well as the mintmark position right.

SteveCaruso- those are peices of crud from the ground. You guys have to remember... I didn't clean this coin. There is still microscopic bits of organic material stuck to the coin. The site that this coin came from is a virtual time capsule that was only in operation for a short time around the turn of the century. It's very isolated and nothing remains today. It was on onne set of maps and then gone by the next set of maps. THAT is why I'm so confident in this coin being genuine. There would have been no reason to counterfeit this coin back then because it didn't become important until later

@DrTones,
When you say "site," do you mean site of a former town?

Nope. Just a lone structure on a map by a stage route. Highway got built and the stage route disappeared along with everything along it.

@vermontensium - *Could* be, yes. But at least from the photos, especially the portion at the top from the multiple angles, it doesn't look like that to my eye. Without it in-hand it's tough, and whether it's verdigris could be checked easily with a balsa wood dowel without any damage to the coin. I could certainly be wrong, but I can't seem to shake my feeling about this. :-)
@LogPotato - I whole-heartedly admit that getting both right would be unusual for most counterfeits made today.
@DrTones - I guess the only good route to go now is to get it certified. They have all of the appropriate apparatus to perform the necessary tests and I wish you luck. :-)

Due to the environmental issues this coin will bring nowhere near VF or XF money no matter where it grades or who grades it. The people that can afford to put high grade sets together will: 1) avoid the coin due to the problems, and 2) wait for a problem free coin that will fit in and match their set. After all, who would want the centerpiece coin of their set to be net graded? That is a fact. If your intent is to squeeze every last cent out of the coin then your best bet is to get it slabbed, put it up on ebay with a rediculous "Buy It Now" price along with the "Best Offer" option and go from there. Only then will you know what it is truly worth.

Great Collections will charge you $10 to list it, and there is no seller fee over $1000, so you're good there. They'll relist 4 more times for that $10 if it doesn't meet your Reserve.
The downside is, not a lot of advance notice/advertising for a given auction, and yours is a sorta niche coin. You may not see the buyer pool you'd want.

I would not go with Stacks Bowers, their website issues are becoming a major detriment to their standing in the auction world. GC, Heritage, or ebay. If Heritage is now ruled out, I'd say GC or ebay. I know Ian won't blow you off like that, and on ebay, of course, you're handling it yourself.

I mean, I know the coin has problems but I still think it's sought after in any condition. Yeah, it won't attract the big dogs with tons of cash, because they can afford to buy a better coin. All I'm hoping to do is attract the middle of the road crowd. Seems like there's a very large gap in between garbage coins that are barely legible and the pristine AU high dollar stuff. I'm hoping this will appeal to the people who don't want the worn flat, barely legible coin for $3k but can't afford to dish out $15k-$20k. I'll be happy with WHATEVER I get because I'm into this for zero dollars. That being said, I'm not a rich man. I'm a Firefighter Paramedic who provides the single source of income for my family. I owe it to them to try. While in the coin store the other day I met one of the active members on this forum. He thought it looked better in person. As far as Heritage goes... What really just ticked me off was the fact that they didn't even want to hear how I came about the coin, or bother to at least try to get my business. On the other hand Stacks congratulated me, wanted to hear the story and encouraged me to send it to them immediately for grading/authentication etc. They actually complimented the coin and the rarity of it. Not so much with Heritage. I got the "It's most likely fake. After you grade it we might want to take a look. Best of luck"

15 to 20k$ for that coin is a pipe dream and is not going to happen.
It might yield 10k$ at auction on a good day with lots of players casting lots .... especially if you get a couple of players that really, really want it.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do and please keep us posted with what avenue you choose to utilize. You will have a lot of watchers.

Certified by PCGS or NGC I'm guessing 7500-8500..maybe 9000. I can't really see more than 10K unless someone gets in a bidding war with another. Won't know until you auction it :-)

Yes those are very realistic prices. I would be happy with any of those.
