they both look to have higher VF details. The first one does look like it could have been cleaned possibly.

I'm the worst at grading these, but aren't they Braided Hair, and not Coronet cents? Surface on the first looks uniform, and there is some red showing on the second.

They are braided hair ed. I don't know why they're calling them coronet. Alaska Coin Exchange has them graded au50 and au55 on the 2nd one.

First coin is NT IMHO. The second one on the other hand is iffy. It looks sort of splotchy. Both coins grade low EF.

I'd be happy to own either of these. Nice detail all around and no major problems.
Circulated coin from before the Civil War. I don't get hung up on cleaned or not, I just assume they all are.
Really nice looking coins.
That's not why I posted here. Just wanted to say thanks for the link. That site has all kinds of quality pics of coins and then the price sold and the date. Interesting stuff to click through now that college football is over. . . .

I like both of those and they look high XF or AU to me. I've dealt with this vendor on several occasions and was always pleased with results. nlp

I'd call them XF-45. The fist one has a bit more wear but has a bit more eye appeal in my opinion.

Well...I guess I could work for Alaska coin. I had them at AU50 and AU55 respectively

I would say AU 50 for the first one and AU 53 for the second. A lot of detail there for XF grades.

I always just look at the hair above the ear, then at the entire wreath on the reverse. After that, I check the fields, which can be difficult on photographs.
Is that about what you all do?
I truthfully don't really bother examining the color of the coin in photos too extensively if it's not too far off, because so many pictures are off color. I posted an image here once that I had taken with bad lighting and white balance settings. Everyone said it was cleaned. Then I realized the problem, took better pictures, reposted, and people started saying "oh, it's not cleaned".
I think in a lot of circumstances it's difficult to judge. Photos can be misleading. Many may look cleaned that are not. Reason being that the camera settings are maladjusted.
