Most Central Asian peoples speak languages related to Turkish, but the unique Tajiks speak a relative of Farsi (a.k.a. Persian) instead. Can you find the St. Petersburg Mint's mint-mark? It is a region of Moldova that claims to be an independent republic, but not a single other country recognizes those claims. It's not a joke, though - the Transinistrians have defended their "independence" by the sword in the past, aided by a detachment of the former-Soviet (now Russian) army stationed there, and the government of Moldova asserts no authority over the "country". Transinistria has a majority of Russian and Ukrainian people, making it quite different than the rest of Moldova (which is full of Moldovans... or are they Romanians? Eastern Europe is complicated), hence the desire for "independence". Transinistria still flies the flag of the Moldovian Soviet Socialist Republic, which alarmingly features a hammer-and-sickle (as does their "national" emblem), but they are not a communist state. As part of that "independence", Transinistria issues its own coins and banknotes. In 2014, they issued the world's first circulating plastic coins. Report this Post to the Staff

NumisRob Bedrock of the Community United Kingdom 18011 Posts	Posted 02/04/2015 04:11 am UK £5 coin, 2000, commemorating the 100th birthday of the Queen Mother: Born on August 4, 1900, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married Prince Albert George, Duke of York, on April 26, 1923. The Prince was the younger brother of Edward, Prince of Wales, and there was no expectation that either he or his descendants would become monarchs. All that changed when King Edward VIII abdicated on December 11, 1936, and Prince Albert succeeded to the throne as King George VI. Brilliantly portrayed by Helena Bonham-Carter in the movie "The King's Speech", the new Queen Consort helped her husband overcome his shyness and his speech impediment. She became extremely popular during World War II, refusing to move out of London, and regularly visiting bombed areas and hospitals. After King George VI's death in 1952, the Queen Mother continued to undertake a large number of official duties and was probably the most popular member of the British Royal Family at the time of her death in 2002.
