> perhaps something like this obverse?
Agreed, but I expect the PC police are so entrenched that we will probably never see another monarch with monarchy accoutrements (really USA spellchecker, accouterments?!)

The Queens ine britians old and new 2015 both look terrible. Let's face it. The new effigy we have is fine. Her first and this one is my favourite. The British ones are just ugly because they exagerate on her oldness. Showing all the wrinkles and stuff. Plus that hideous crown.eww. I just hope that if we get a new effigy it will be similar to the one we have today. Also I hope Canada backs out of the monarchy when Charles is coronated. That's only if Stephen Harper isn't still in power. Then we can have our own coins. Now how exciting would that be!

As most of us are aware any changes the U.K. makes on their coinage obverses is usually followed shortly thereafter (within a few years) by Canada and other commonwealth nations.
Given that the last portrait is now nearly 13 years old, I can certainly see this as a possibility for 2016 or 2017. If the Queen lives another 10 years it will still be the shortest series during her reign.

Well I wish her Majesty well and a continued long life it really is time for the Royal portrait to disappear from our coins and twenty dollar bank note. To me it is a final vestige of colonialism and time to move on. It is time to give our circulating coins a true Canadian theme on both sides in time for 2017. There are many significant choices that could replace the Queens portrait.

On the topic of the British Monarchy, this is an interesting blog: On Victoria Day, Think About Ending the Monarchy in Canada http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/tom-fr...7299102.htmlNot to take this into a political debate but I don't think it's fair to blame one political party over another. Without any doubt a new constitution totally separating the Queen (or any GB monarchy) from head of state will face decades of court challenges when it eventually does occur. If the queen simply divorced us would seem the best solution. As a country we seem to thrive on discontent perhaps partially due to lack of a common heritage or identity, heck we're still arguing over interpretations regarding the Canadian Bill of Rights that was passed in 1960.

I'm all for" Canadianizing " our currency but if they do update the Queens effigy she should look like a Queen, bring the crown back ,what's the point of being royal unless you look the part. If we do go Canadian at some point let's keep the politicians off and put people that DO something for Canada on our money not the ones that do things TO our country.JMHO Dan

Vaguely recalling the prevailing high emotion when Canada and its Prime Minister Lester B Pearson chose a newly designed flag 50 years ago, who or what would grace our coins if not GB monarchy? Perhaps each time we have a federal election the ruling party on campaign promises would be granted the right to change it?....I'm being facetious, while recalling the new licence plate fiasco here in Alberta. We've entered an era whereby total consensus is expected, however impossible.
I agree with you about political figures canadiancoinaholic, the older I get the more I'm feeling our everyday lives are already dominated by far too much politics already.

As an American I don't have a dog in the fight but of course I have an opinion.
The Queen's effigy is a better choice than elected politicians on national coinage. If the US were a part of the Commonwealth I would prefer her picture on our coins rather than presidents. It keeps politics out of the equation.
That said, I wonder if it would be palatable for Canada to have an elected head of state (thus a Canadian) but still recognize the Monarch and keep her (or him later) on the coins.

Unless someone whispers in his ear the idea of putting him on the obverse.

I heard the same thing, since she is older that is the direction they are headed, I just can't remember where I heard it from.

There is really nothing better or deserving than the king or queens effigy to grace our currency or coins in our system of government. That said, I think Parker Brothers could have design and produced a better poly note.

Yes, please. The current effigy is the pits.
I always liked the UK's 2nd effigy.

Can't help but recall the history of Ireland and it's choice of displaying an image of a HARP on the obverse of it's coinage, after exiting the Commonwealth in the early 1900s. It also seems that we Canadians excell at HARPING about virtually everything -- the media is filled with daily criticism, it gets depressing reading what an unhappy country we've become...... A possibility, a harp..... <joking>
