I found a 1980 Spain fifty pesetas coin today. It has the words "Juan Carlos I Rey De Espana". It is from 1980, which I have read is a proof year. Anybody have any idea how much it is worth? Pictures below:

Hello and welcome.

Prior to 1983, Spain used an obscure dating system; the "large" date ("1980" on your coin) is the year the master dies were prepared. The actual year the coin was struck is hidden in tiny numerals inside the small stars to left and right on the reverse. In the case of your coin, that year is "1982" ("19" in the left star, "82" in the right star).

The coin catalogues illustrate this date by putting the actual year of issue in brackets. So on the Krause/NGC database page for your coin type, your coin is listed as "1980 (82)". No proofs were struck in 1982.

Thank you Sap. I see at MS 63 this is worth $2.50. What quality would you say this is in?

In my book from 2002 50 PTS from 1980 is 1 euro, 1981 1.50 and 1982 3.50.

If you look at the stars under Espana '82 you might be able to see an 80, 81 or 82. If you have the latter then it might be worth more. There also seems to be a 75-80 version. But these are top grade values. If it's not, then it'll be almost worthless. Prices may have gone up over time, but to be honest I don't think they have much.

Yes, for older Spanish coins (pre-euro) that "inverted" orientation is normal.

My Spanish catalogue from 2014 shows the 1980 (82) 50 ptas at 3 euros. Mintage 30.950,00
You can pick up a set (50 cents to 100 ptas) in a plastic wallet for around 5 euros.
