We should also realize that for some older people lugging around that much weight in foreign coins and having to store and contain them may be more of a chore than she wanted.

When we do shows in the US we will go to some of the local dealers and buy Canadian coin off of them to bring back if we are driving. The standard rate is about 85 per cent of whatever the Xe.com mid rate is at the time. In my opinion the OP made two mistakes here 1. Hammered an old lady on a coin rip and 2. Broadcast it to all the forum members. I sit with Double eagle on this.

Pac: I agree the mistakes were made... but it doesn't mean that restorative practices may not be adhered to... perhaps the OP didn't count the rolls and just looked at 'em figuring it was around $30-40 bucks worth.. sure take a shot.. maybe... perhaps the OP may go back and pay the lady some more... who knows..

What I do know is that this isn't a person trying to sell a coin as MS when it's at best EF... This isn't a grader that instead of doing a correct grade and listing any details just does a summative grade.

I read somewhere that numismatics can be filled with con's, crooks, thieves and liars... and that's just the good people in the business... sure the phrase made me laugh but there are some issues in this hobby like any other.. I think this person is probably very new and still has a lot to learn.... In my opinion the compass is a better tool to teach direction than a switch...

Now speaking of problems I have one .. it's 5 o'clock somewhere and I don't have a beer yet!

edit: on a side note I think one thing should be celebrated... there's another Can coin collector south of the 49.... always great news...!

Lets put this into a perspective maybe we here in Canada could actually understand, we are all too familiar with US/Canada exchange rate's etc.

From CRHing I get buckets of foregn coins, euros, pences, farthings, etc. I HAVE 0 chance in using them here in Canada, I have a few options:

A) put them in a jar and pull them out once in a while and look at them till I die
B) put them in a jar and wait till I decide to travel to said country and lug 20 pounds of coins with me
C) Put them back into circulation where I found them
D) try and sell them bulk, maybe for a loss
E) throw them in the garbage
F) donate them to Charity

nuff said.

ace not quite true. There are people in Canada who will buy the useable FX off of you at a fair rate. Donation to charity is always good Karma!
Then there is always the option of giving them to a youngster to try and spark interest.

Pacific, you are correct (not sure about FX?) but still time & Effort, and we don't know where or how this lady got the coins in the first place.

bottom line most avenues in getting rid of foreign money include losses.

If you cant spend them anywhere and banks wont take them, coin shops dont want them (unless there silver) then what do you do if you want to get rid of them?

I find it a little ironic that a person could get a $1000 dollar coin for $4.00 everyone congratulates him on a "nice score" as mentioned in this thread..

Quote:
("I thought it was worth maybe $200 max not knowing what variety it was. I asked the dealer how much he wanted and he replied with $4.00, I gave him a five and went on my way.")

The Dollarman figured it was worth a few hundred but neglected to say anything. Here's a the link, so how is this different?
In any business you take the good with the bad, I say give the OP of this thread a break.

I think there will always be "what it is worth" and "what I am willing to pay" We are always looking for a "good" deal for ourselves. In all honesty I know I usualy am!

Obviously people have taken this original topic a little off track. Canadians must understand that in the southern US their coins are simply "junk" and not accepted most places. I went into this deal not knowing what there was in the lot. She gave a price and I accepted it. She told me her husband was a scrapper, and received these in a trade and that they were taking up room for some time and she wanted to get rid of them. Obviously there are some who don't agree with how they were purchased but I feel no need in having to be critiqued by someone who may not understand the international coin culture in the southern US. That said, it is what it is, I bought them for what I did, and by no means was trying to get one over on the seller.
Best of Luck to all.

There is a difference between cherry picking a
dealer and taking advantage of a situation. I
find it ironic that you do not understand the
difference.

Everest..I guess I'm just to darn honest, I always try to offer a fair price thats just who I am.
Cherrypicking is looked at differently but it all adds back up to the same thing, I always feel good getting a deal but never want to screw anyone over to do so.
