As of November 2018, he is still in jail. His story is fishy. He says he cannot obtain the gold, that he gave it to his x-girlfriend who gave it to a stranger who...yada, yada, yada.
http://www.oldsaltblog.com/2018/11/...a-continues/He is playing a game of cat and mouse, betting that he will get out and have access to ALL of the gold... even if he is 90 when he gets out.
Maybe he has gotton or hopes to get a slick lawyer to get him out. The part I do not understand is when one is talking about millions and millions of the lion's share of the treasure, why not give up a measley million or two for taxes, fees, or ?
The funny thing about a find that big, even if found in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, dozens of folks, governments, etc. will file a claim, saying that the gold you found actually belongs to him.
Why not just let him out and watch him like a hawk, he will eventually go to where the gold is or make arrangements to do so. How does one expect to get rid of such a vast amount and expect not to get caught.
In any case, the iRS would love him, I betcha the capital gains tax would be murder!
All he has to do is fake a serious illness, bribe outside medical experts to testify that it is so, and they would problably let him out... all the while keeping a very close tab on him. I doubt he would be able to make a phone call without a half-dozen folks listening in.
Something like that, or he has a plan, a workable one, in which he can collect all of it, sell it on the black market to a collector and be free of it. Who knows.
I wonder how long I would last in prison before I caved in. Maybe some of us would do the same thing and bet the authorities would let him out before he got too old. Heck, the article is over a year old, maybe he is already out.
The way I feel is that without him, the treasure problably would not have been found, so give him a good break on taxes and liens and fortfitures and just let him go with a large share of it... legally.
I would bet that there is a lot of behind the scenes drama that has been played out... who knows?
