Has anyone ever come across this book? Just when you thought you've seen the worst of it, along comes this book...

I came across it in my library, and it's really bad that it's not even hilarious. The "mistrikes and oddities" are PMD in the majority of the illustrations This book is just

From the intro of the book: "Satisfactory explanations are still being sought for flat 0s, slanted 1s, etc. These items vary in degree considerably from coin to coin, even thought the same date and mint." These below are called "mint faults" (exact words) by the author. Here are some of the less dark pics (and their "Jewett's Index No.", since in the front of the book the writer insists that these words be present for some mysterious unspecified reason):

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"Flat 9" price listed: Min. (it is stated at the front that this "indicates value of 25-50c above standard value)

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"Flat 6" price listed: Min.

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"Flat 0" price listed: Min.

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"Flat 6" price listed: $3.00

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"Flat 0" price listed: $6.00

This one is outrageous:

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"Slanted 1" price listed: $25.00

Here is a classic textbook example of Machine Doubling and an even more outrageous pricing:

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"Dble-line date" price listed: $75.00

While there are a few examples of legit "IIB" or "BIE" die chips, the majority are like those pictured above, PMD or MD. Most are without pictures and their descriptions don't even make sense, like "1954 S-4: Filled 9 with #1s under tail of 5".

Some of the pics are just downright horrible, you can't make out what it's trying to say. The pics used here are smaller than a dime:

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent

And this one looks like it was roughly done with a marker and a pen (I don't actually know if it's correct or not):
E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent

Surprisingly, this one actually looks like a legit RPM to my inexperienced eyes (anyone can confirm?).
E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"D dbled west (so-called perfect)" price listed: $6.00. He mentioned that it is a 1:15,000 chance to find one, which sounds that it would be ridiculously common for roll hunters.
Also a mention of THE 1955 DDO being found in 1:250,000, which I don't agree with either.

I have no idea how this ever got published in the first place. "Dedicated to the advancement and growth of Numismatics" it says in the very first page. The author doesn't even seem to know what he's writing about...

Parallel to the rim is a coin wrapper/vending machine/coin counter injury.

The thing is, the author says everything in his book is a "mint fault", even these flattened-parallel-to-the-rim ones. There is even a note for one of the coins listed, saying that the author has no idea what causes "Liberty [to be] missing" when there are "no wear or removal marks". No picture given, but it sounds like a struck through.

The author doesn't know about the subject he/she is writing about.

Here's another one with no picture: "sm60 D-12: Line concentric with rim through STATES". What does it make you think of?

The RPM is 1960D-1MM-001
E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
I was offered a roll of these to purchase once, but passed. He still sold them a little at a time and got more than he wanted for the roll.

The 1957 machine damaged one was way out of line in price. But I bet the book was probably in the early 1960's. Probably before the BIE fad that had collectors searching for these. I see no mention of this so far on the images/information?

Hit the nail on the head coop. It's printed in 1961. When did people start looking for BIEs, and did MD coins sell for that much back then?

There are only 5 pictures of any "Liberty" die chips. His pricing is very inconsistent.

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"BIE" price listed: $15.00

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"LIBERITY" price listed: $7.50

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"BIE" price listed: $5.00

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"BIE" price listed: $5.00

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"EIR" price listed: $20.00

E.g.-Jewett's-Mistrikes-And-Oddities-In-The-Lincoln-Cent
"IIB" price listed: $4.50

He has THE 1955 DDO listed at $125... I wonder if he's willing to part with it at that kind of low price? (Even adjusted for inflation, it's still lower than what PCGS priced it at F12.)

Not sure when they stopped, but they did realize it was a die chip and then stopped.

Back in the 50's, 60's an even 70's there weren't that many people who really understood what errors were or how they were created. So there were a lot of misidentifications and misdescriptions. To some extent the hobby still suffers from this bad information today. (This is why we can be such sticklers for the use of proper terms, to keep for continuing confusing people with bad information.)
