There is a item that I have my eye on. But the ebayer in question is making the classic reserve auction mistake and discouraging people. The item in question is now at $0.99 and who knows could go up. But if I bid say $800 and the item is now at $100 and if the reserve is $700 will ebay automatically enter my bid above the reserve?

No.
It will bid you up to 1 increment over the next lower bid.

It's actually foolish on the part of the seller. If they started the auction at the lowest price they would accept, they make the sale if just one person is willing to pay that amount. Starting at 0.99 with a $50 reserve they only make the sale if 2 people are willing to bid $50.

So the one I lost last week auction+BIN - where I bid about 85% of the BIN price had a reserve above that? Wow... learn something every day.

The key words in that statement is, 'maximum bid is AT LEAST the reserve price....." Because many times my maximum bid is below the reserve price, and the bidding won't increase an increment unless I have competition bidding me up. But apparently if someone hits the reserve with a max bid, BINGO, the bid jumps.

I plan on bidding a good chunk and may very well hit the reserve
