so a few years ago my kids were collecting kinder eggs and I would buy them when ever we were at the store. kids would come home eat the chocolate and play with the toy. but once my kid showed me a magic trick box she got from the kinder egg, you would put a coin in slide the tray and the coin would disappear, I noticed the coin was actually a 5 lire coin from Italy I think the date was 1848 but I cant remember for sure so I traded the coin for a loonie then a few weeks later put it on ebay and it sold for over $200 i posted this story on a treasure hunting forum years back but most people there never heard of Kinder eggs because they are illegal in the states apparently the reason they are illegal is because you cant put an inedible object inside an edible object!! so my question for you is have you ever heard of Kinder eggs containing valuable prizes? or do you think this was just a fluke? maybe the guys at kinder went to coin dealers and bought their box of bargain coins and this one happened to be in there?

I have never heard of finding anything of value inside kinder eggs, nor have I ever heard of kinder eggs, but of course, I'm in the US. Not uncommon to find rare coins inside food items though. I went to Olive Garden restaurant a few years ago, and when I bit into my eggplant parmesan, lo and behold, I nearly broke a tooth on a 1793 chain cent!

Most likely that 5 lire was from either 1862, 1864, or 1865. Did not mint one in 1848 that I can find in the NGC World Coin guide.

I love Kinder Eggs...it's completely insane that they are banned in the US. I've never heard of a valuable object being found in an egg, but I have heard that some of the toys move decently on ebay.

Ohhh.... I can just hear those who collect NCLT complain that you "damaged" (ate) the "box" that the coin came in...

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought perhaps that a kinder was some sort of bird.
