They do not have to tell the public anything. Just stop minting them. Stores run out of cents all the time; this time it is for good.

Eliminating the penny would tell the public that it is no longer needed. It would show the public that prices have risen so much over the decades that having a penny doesn't make sense.
So I don't believe this will happen, because the gov't doesn't like to admit rising prices.

Just because they do not admit prices have risen does not change the fact that prices have risen. Kill the cent now. Older people may never get over it. Younger people will certainly get over it. Those not born yet will look back at the cent like we do the Half Cent today. "What was the fuss?"

And you think the people don't already know that prices have risen that much? It WILL happen eventually. The question is how much we will have to waste on each one before we finally say enough is enough. We lose 100% but we still keep it. Will we keep it when we are losing 500%? 1000%? At some point the loss will be great enough we will The loss on the Half Cent was in the 200% or so range when it was eliminated.

Yeah, I agree completely. At some point it would be too wasteful even for the government. The gov't hates change though, no matter how simple of a change it could be. I remember reading that a 14 year old figured out a way for the federal government to save millions (I forget the exact amount of the top of my head) just by changing the font style on their documents.

I guess you are right again! Just look how far we have come from a Constitutional Republic! We have had lots of changes over the years, but only change that benefits the special interest groups and lobbyists.

I think it would make sense to get rid of the cent and the dollar bill and have a dollar coin. We would save money on maintaining printed bills and save on getting rid of the cent and have all prices rounded to the nickel.

Would it be the current dollar coins that are circulated today? I would like a government that doesn't waste (much) money, but I don't believe our government should make our money as cheaply as possible. In fact, I would like money that actually costs something to produce. That would give it value outside of just the confidence of the dollar .

Get rid of the note, like Canada did in 1987, and the dollar coin will circulate well.
